I have the basic modified flashlight and I have to say it is a good flashlight for the money, but I was wondering are there any other better bulb alternatives that I could drop-in?
I put a 4 d maglite bulb in (stupidly) and it blew (pretty obviously), but it was bright for about the 1 second that it worked :thumbsdow and that is basically all I've tried so far.

Radio shack has a KPR112 that is rated at 6V...works fine in mine. VERY white color, and it only cost $1.39

I neglected to mention it in my first post, but I'm already using the kpr112 and was wondering if there was anything better that could run on the 123s and not melt the reflector/lens.

with improved output in light comes improved output in heat...and plastic reflector's melting threshold is fairly low...so theres not much selection on that part unless you know a place where metal reflectors can be found that works in your light

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure the reflector and lens are irremovable, but I'll check mine. So, assuming that the reflector and lens are irremovable is there anything better than the kpr112 that won't melt the reflector/lens? I'll have to check out that GH24 that was suggested before.

EDIT: I was wrong the lens are reflector are removable, but I think they are abnormal sizes and cannot be replaced with different ones. The sizes I measured are 1 3/16th of an inch for the diameter of the outer edge to outer edge of the reflector and the lens. The inner edge to inner edge of the reflector is 1 1/16th of an inch at the widest point. The holder for the bulb is plastic and accepts push in bulbs. I can post pictures if someone believes they can find parts for upgrades.

So this brings me to my original question are there any better bulbs than the kpr112 that won't melt the plastic parts?

i've done a 3xCR123A/3xRCR123A mod to a cheap, small Dorcy 2xAA flashlight.

the bulb that i use is the 6D MagLite MagnumStar Xenon bulb. works very well with similar light output to the AuroraHotLite MiniMag mod and has much longer burntimes. however, since the Dorcy is all PLASTIC (including the reflector), i've never pushed it much beyond a few minutes of use without shutting it off and letting it cool - i don't want to learn another meaning to the term "burntime"!!! the light is not overly warm after five minutes of use, so i probably could run it a bit longer with no problems.

go with the 6D MagLite MagnumStar (not the less bright, shorter burning Krypton Star). it will work well for you, and it's pretty cheap to replace ($2-$3 in low quantity).

Yeah, I was thinking about using the maglite bulb, but that one isn't prefocused, so I was considering the GH24 from the earlier suggestion that is prefocused. So it is pretty much between the GH24 and the 6D Magnumstar what do you think would be better?

not familiar with the GH24, but thanks for the tip. i'll have to try one at some point. the 6D MagnumStar is certainly plenty bright when driven by 3x123A primaries or secondaries.

Hmmm, ok I think I'm set with the GH24 and I'll hope it doesn't melt the reflector/lens.

I've ran the gh24 in a maglite with the standard lens and reflector for about 10 minutes at a time without any problems but I can't comment on whether the everready can handle the extra heat. Another alternative is an overdriven 5d krypton star which is brighter than the 6d magnum star. The 5d magnum star just instaflashes though.

Which of the bulbs was brighter the GH24 or the Krypton? Also, what voltage were you running the bulbs at? The Krypton 5D is pretty similar to the KPR112 in that they are both krypton bulbs rated for 5D, so I don't know if it will be brighter.

I was running a mag 2c with 3 x cr123 primaries. The GH24 was brighter, no competition, but bear in mind it draws around 1.7 amps so puts out quite a lot of heat.

Assuming you are in the states what is the best place to get the GH24 from? I think I'm set on the GH24 and using it in bursts so the plastic parts don't melt.
