Am I the only one who drives the speed limit?

Term from working in a veterinarian’s office years ago; proximal is toward the centerline of a being, distal is away from the centerline. I should put the mudflaps closer into the body on the rear to lessen wind resistance a little.

What makes me scratch my head is the combination of too-low speed limits and laws restricting travel in the left lane unless passing.

The main highways near me have 65 mph speed limits, but the normal flow of traffic is 70-75. If I'm not allowed to travel in the left lane unless I'm passing someone, and I can't pass someone without exceeding the speed limit, doesn't that make left-lane travel de facto illegal? I know some states have speed limit exemptions only when passing, but that's not the case here.

We also have a "move over for emergency vehicles on the shoulder" law here, which I find to be offensive. The law is ostensibly for the safety of emergency personnel, which is fine. But then why does the law not apply to any vehicle on the shoulder? The implication is that the lives of emergency personnel are more important than the life of a random person with a flat tire. Offensive.

oogabooga, big word very scary...

these are anatomical terms. very applicable to anything having an anatomy. especially something like a car which has symmetry and a body plan (just like an animal).

As a police officer of Lithuania I may tell you this:

1. Your vehicle speedometer is ALWAYS lying, it displays speed 3-6 km/h higher than it really is (depends on speed and vehicle model);

2. In Lithuania every speed camera has an error deviation +-2 or +-3 km/h which is ALWAYS being counted in favor of the driver;

3. There is NO fine if you drive 10 km/h faster than the speed limit in Lithuania.

Thus if the speed limit is 50 km/h and you drive 64 according to your vehicle speedometer indication, legally you are safe.

If you drive below speed limit you force other drivers to overtake and overtake is one of if not the most dangerous maneuver on the road. If your “comfort” is more valuable for you than traffic safety, perhaps, you better not drive at all…

P.S.: An overtake is passing a vehicle in your lane by driving into the opposite traffic lane.

Posted Highways & Interstate speeds have increased 5~10 around here recently, around 80 for Interstate flow speed.
Flow of traffic & Not having to change lanes is safe,, trying to get around someone who's slow > is dangerous.

Time is money for most & the slight extra burn of fuel is worth it, thus the increased posted speeds.

This is at the root of why I consider many interstate speed limits to be too low. When the limit is 10-15 mph lower than the safe, normal speed people travel, it increases the distribution of speeds people are traveling and causes people to have to change lanes more often. That's more dangerous than if everyone were traveling faster and very close in speed to one another.

The other harmful effect of this is that it effectively creates an environment where the police have cause to execute a traffic stop on anyone at any time. That's not something anyone should want in a free and fair society.

Of course, the safety aspect of increasing speed limits requires some grasp of nuance, and it's much easier for the police and politicians to repeat the same tired platitude that "speed kills."

Yeah, my favorite part is how on most city streets; our politicians simply lowered the limits but didn't bother to tell drivers. The long stretch of road I use to get home from my Graveyard Shift job used to be 30mph. And of course you could easily do 40mph without having to worry about the speed cameras going off. Needless to say, I'm sure I'm not the only one who got a handful of camera speeding tickets in the mail that first month the law was changed but the city "forgot" to post the new 25mph Limit signs.

All about a bunch of greedy pigs stealing from Working Class individuals who have to be on the roads in order to commute to and from Work. Well, lazy and greedy pigs. They could have simply raised taxes. Not like anyone could legally stop them. But it's just a much better Public Relations gimmick to say they lowered the Speed limits to save lives.

This morning as I was cruising 62 in a 60 and it seemed like 9 out of 10 motorists were going past me in the 70's and 80s mph I started coming up on brake lights. The pavement was wet but it wasn't raining. Yet mile after mile I eased past many of the people driving way too fast for conditions and had wiped out.

Fast Forward to 30 seconds.. the Ferrari driver was 100% at fault by not getting off the road.

A decade or two ago there was a F1 race in some european city, Monaco iirc. they blocked off streets and had F1 cars raced there, there was a crash, police came and tested the pilot for alcohol, lol. they explained this by saying the crash happened on city street, and it is mandatory procedure there to test anyone involved in a crash for alcohol, the fact that it was blocked off F1 race did not matter to them, lol.
