Last week I got an email from DiNotte lighting about a factory online sale and one of the discounted items was their amber flasher promoted for daytime use. After seeing this video clip on YouTube I was sold on the concept then came up with a homemade substitute.

I added a transparent amber cover made from a cutdown 1" dia plastic prescription container to my reflector modded SSC P4 ARC LS. This simply slips over the lens, allowing easy removal of the cover when darkness falls and is mounted using TwoFish lockblocks. Because the light has a Piglet driver with stroble and 2 brightness levels I can take the cover off when it gets darker for headlight use. Although the light may not seem intense in the pictures below, the amber colour stands out in traffic due to the blinking action. My XC hardtail MTB sticks mostly to dedicated trails and with occasional use in the downtown core on weekends as I'm not a commuter cyclist. This isn't as bright as DiNotte's advertised 140 Lumens nor will it have the same runtime off of a CR123, but it's an acceptable tradeoff for the price.

Maybe I should build a single speed project to put this on? :)

I found an amber blinkie in Big-Lots for $1.99. I use it with my DIY dynamo LED headlight at night and it's very noticeable in daylight as well.

Thanks Migs, I'll take a real shot of my bike soon and PM it

Nice find n4zou, that style reflector light was my first red taillight in the 90's.

Does rotating it 90 degrees change the viewing angle to oncoming traffic?

Despite the superficial appearance of the lens, it's actually not a reflector. I have some myself, and the beam pattern is pretty much the sum of all the individual 5mm LEDs, which is to say conical.

If you did want an amber front light that's also a reflector, at one time Cateye had a front version of the LD500 with a clear reflex-reflector lens and amber LEDs. But the LEDs are very weak, even for 5mm LEDs, so I wouldn't go looking for daytime visibility with that light even if you could find one.

Nova does make amber BULLs, and Whelen has amber TIR3s, if anyone's looking for a regulated pre-built weatherproof light with a large lens and high output. Most people aren't interested in such a clumsy item, and for them there's DiNotte or a flashlight mod :)

is there a way to modify a fenix type light to a amber type headlight?
diniotes is nice, but i would prefer a multi use light that goes from amber flash mode for daytime use and also can be used at night. is there a slip on type lens, rather a pill bottle that would widen the flashing beam for daytime use?.

The red diffuser may be OK but it protrudes a little.

The red filter is smaller but will not diffuse the beam much. But you can probably use a DIY approach to make the beam more diffused.

i am trying to replicate the yellow amber dinotte front light using a slip on, similiar to the op pill bottle adapter .
the dinotte yellow seems to be the way to go for daytime use, but i would rather only carry one blinking headlight,
trying to duplicate the pill bottle yellow but with better wide angle optic.
i wonder how the fenix with the red filter compares in light output to the dinotte and the new planet bike superflash for a rear bicycle light.
does the yellow flashing dinotte use a amber led ?
would it be possible to mod a planet bike super flash to use the same yellow led?
just trying some cost saving and easy measures. dinottes are great but expensive, i have a white one. but the self contained super flash makes them more versatile, plus they are a lot cheaper.
i have been thinking of getting the rear red dinotte but now wondering if or 3 superflashs, which hare cheaper would be better, if i could change the superflash to amber , that would be fantastic.
