And now, the Opalec/123 custom light.

That would be yours, Darell. You like?

A couple of specs to interest you:

Head is several pieces, has o-ring seal at front lens, has 3/32" thick Lexan lens/ LED protector, the Opalec unit is removable to replace/upgrade it, head/body threads are sealed by o-ring, the outer/inner head sections are threaded/o-ringed, etc.

It should be fairly waterproof.

The body has a 1/4-20 tapped hole in it for various mounting options.

Finish is bright, no anodizing.

Well, OK then. NOW we're talkin'!

I do like it! Is there a lanyard hole, or is that task left to the tapped hole?

Very nice indeed. Lexan lens? How sweet is that? Removable Opalec unit? Very, very nice touch.

So where's yours?

You can also put it on a camera tripod for pointing at your work. I'll post a pic of that configuration when I do up the rest.

I'll make a simple eye-bolt type of thing for putting a lanyard through, and send it along, Darell.

Thanks Ryan - I'm all too familiar with the Berkeley point offerings. There isn't much there that I don't already own!

Doug: There are some gooffy little bendy-legged tripods that I've seen to take self-protraits when on the go... that would make a nice task-light base, wouldn't it? An eye-bolt would be fantastic. Man, this is WAY exciting.

You like knurling, don't you Doug? Admit it.

Jack O - I don't think it would fit a Madmax sandwich in it's current form. However, the nice thing about it is that it's totally custom - how do you want it? I can change the configuration to take a different emitter/driver - no problem. In fact the Madmax sandwich is likely easier to accomodate, since it doesn't have the little tiny pins the Opalec requires for it's original purpose.

I've been thinking about the idea, and having a totally custom light, including the Madmax or Badboy driver with a HD Luxeon, now THAT would be cool. I don't know if I'd offer these for sale, it would depend on the difficulty of the job.

What is the regulation like? The feature of the 2AA Maglight unit that I like the most is the beautifyl steady regulation. Will this have it?

Willmore,

The regulator is built into the Opalec unit. You can't get rid of it.

Doug,

It's longer than I thought it'd be...did you go with a tail-switch? I can't wait to see some more pics

Willmore: What John said -

The regualation of the Opalec is like... perfect. Doesn't matter what you use to power the unit, and it doesn't matter what light it is sitting in. The electronics are all in the Opalec unit. It is the only product on the market that I know of that provides truly flat output over the entire viable life of the battery (viable life? That's a bit odd, but you know what I mean... until the battery is DEAD). This is the whole reason I wanted a light built around the module. Much as I like the Minimag (not all that much, actually) I wanted a more robust, smaller light for a single 123 cell. This is it.

My guess is 6-7 hours of totally flat output on a single little 123 cell. But nobody'll know for sure until we try it out.

Man this is nice lookin'. I'm usually not into custom work but may have to be eventually if they're going to look like this...

Here's a challenge:
Make a "*sandwich/pill ready" head (w/room for LS optics) that can accept a 123 or AA batt tube, and then make those batt tubes extendable (just by screwing on another section). It should be tailswitch capable (compatable with switches already available for maglite/streamlight Jr.) This would be an incredibly flexible setup, and a LS modder's dream come true.

*by sandwich/pill, I am of course referring to the Ill-Pill, and the MADMAX and BADBOY sandwiches (and most any other drop-in mod that may come along later).

Yes, this would be awesome. However, please remember that I'm doing these one-at-a-time on my manual lathe. No CNC (yet!) for me. However, I'm going to school this year to learn about CNC machining, so who knows what I'll be able to offer in a couple of years...

Currently, if you want to send me a few Madmax or badboy sandwiches to play with, I could do up something like this one, but to fit that configuration.

Yes, Darell, I DO like knurling...makes the piece look nice. So there!

John Frederick, it is a bit longer than the absolute minimum. I made it a little longer in the back end to accomodate the tapped hole, and the head could be maybe 1/4" or so smaller. I've thought of a couple of ways to shorten it a little. Maybe on my own version...
