Another HP Notebook Li-Ion Battery Recall

I'm honestly surprised that this is still an ongoing problem, but this recall was just issued by HP for 70,000 notebooks.

That's got to be a big expense considering shipping, replacement costs, etc.

2 reported venting with flame incidents, according to that notice... the expense of the recall, and the resultant damage to their reputation, will be almost ruinous. It would be very interesting to find out exactly where they cheaped out on these. Bad QC in the cells, the circuitry or the assembly?

HP was once a bastion of quality and integrity. That day has long since passed.

At least ThinkPads and MacBook's still hold the torch :candle:

I'm sure most owners won't hear of this recall, and this is more a CYA and/or Govt. mandated requirement...even though they characterize it as a "voluntary" recall.

I have my doubts about Thinkpads after China's Lenova bought it from IBM in 2005. IBM's collaboration/support ends in 2010. I wouldn't buy one afterwards without copious reviews. There is limited recourse for US consumers when buying a totally Chinese owned/made product.

Thanks for the heads up.......Looks like these batt. packs are charged as one unit in series/together as one, not sure how many of the cells make up the batt. pack, three or four? (could not read the voltage) This situation has been the main reason for previous problems that we all know. Just as well those that use Li-Ion cells in flashlights charge them as single cells in appropriate chargers minimizing any such problems.
