Does anyone have any success stories of backpack mounted lighting? I was thinking of trying to mount a light to one of the back pack straps or similar. Any input\ideas?

I have not tried it, but the zebralight will be perfect for that kind of application.

Check out what firefighters use on their turnout gear. I think Pelican has some pretty decent units that fit your description.

Why not a good headlamp?

I use either the Inova 24/7 or the Streamlight Sidewinder...the Sidewinder's a little better, because of the tilting head and the broadeer/snugger clip. My main bag/backpack is the Sandpiper Bug-out bag.

Start with the light you want to hike with, then figure out how to mount it.

The ZebraLight should work well. It can easily do double duty as a strap mounted light, or slip it into the headband for a headlight. That means one less extra light you have to carry.

Boyscout anglehead light, ROP-low, 6 Eneloops in a pair of Kaidomain cheap casettes. Bulb stood back by about 1, 1.3mm with a washer in order to achieve a wide, floody focus without holes. Belt clip on light through D-ring on backpack strap, Velcro bundling wrap attaching the strap to the light just above the battery compartment.

It's ugly, but it works - and it's bright by muggle standards.

If all else fails, and your preferred torch has a clip of some sort, you may be able to sew a piece of material (preferably nylon strap) to your backpack's arm strap at the top where it's level with your shoulders, leaving an opening for the clip to secure into... or you could do the velcro trick... The possibilities could be endless, if your imagination will let it!

I agree, this what I did with my Arc. I like carry small and light with all my gear.

. a spare length of polyester strap same width as the original headband
. a plastic snap lock (see post #6)
. basic sewing skills or some trail guides of same size

will make a strap to secure any headlamp w/ the batteries housed together w/ the lamp module.

headlamps w/ external battery packs may need bicycle inner tubing cut-outs to hold battery unit & lamp unit together firmly.

headlamps w/ 3-point strap loops attaching a strap w/ a clip end ensures the unit does not slip downwards, by hooking it over backpack straps w/ D-loop. those w/o D-loops will have to further tighten the strap.

:)

When I read backpack mounted light I was thinking really big light that you need a backpack to power

Yikes! No, nothing that crazy. These ideas are great, thank you everyone! Not sure if the arc would work for me in terms of output, though a good short/medium range flood is the effect I'm looking for. I think I'll look into a Zebralight - the Tomahawk looks awesome but is some serious money. In the meantime I may try strap mounting a multi 5mm light.

Petzl E+Lite is great for this too, it has a built in clip and the ball-joint makes pointing it in the right direction very easy. Unfortunately, it has no regulation so it dims quite a bit over time. But as it uses button cells, a set of spares will hardly take up any space.
