Any interest in a Phoenix area GT?

Heya Beastmaster...

Im kinda new around here, but i already am immersed in the addiction!

Right now, the wife and I are living in northern California, but in the near future(probably 6-8 months from now) we will be moving to Phoenix... I would be very excited to meet people with fellow inerests!

Stay in contact if you like!

Hello Steve!

Great idea........I'm betting we could talk Patriot36 in to coming out. There has to be others as I've seen various AZ folks posting up on CPF!!

Any ideas as to where???

None yet. I'm thinking Central Phoenix area - like the Chili's or My Big Fat Greek Restaurant at the Biltmore.

As much as I'd like to, my wife still doesn't know I visit this forum. I can't imagine what she'd say when I tell her that I'd like to go meet a bunch of guys and talk about flashlights. Perhaps I'm just a closet flashaholic.

When you all get in, let me know. We can meet for dinner or something like that.

I've been thinking about places that

a) Have enough dark spots to play with lights
b) Won't freak if more hardware than flashlights are brought out
c) is centrally located

I was originally thinking of the 5 and Diner at 16th and Highland. However, they post very publicly that no weapons are to be brought onto even the parking lot....which precludes even bringing 4 cell ROP's into play. That's a pity, because they have some killer dark areas behind 5&D. And that 5&D is really anal about anything that looks threatening.

So - the next thought was somewhere in the area of central Scottsdale. There's an Outback Steakhouse at Indian School and Goldwater that may suffice - it's got some dark crannies in the nearby parking garage (I used to work in the office building that the parking garage is attached to) and it's a good test for lights to overcome light pollution.

Any other ideas?

Lebkuecher, your suggestion for Lost Dutchman sounds good; I read that thread where it sounded like everyone had a great time. The photos were nice, too.

Beastmaster, were you considering something more informal and/or closer to home than AJ? Do you think a small, quiet group could use the garage without attracting too much attention (and an unwanted taser demonstration)? That Scottsdale location would be pretty close to us.

Regards,
Will

Definitely something more informal.

LD is fun, but AJ is a bit far for some folk. AZ_Tibor lives north west of me, and I don't know if he'd want to drive that far. I'm in North Central Phoenix (7th Ave/Greenway) and he's further west/north than I am.

Hence why I was looking for something a bit more central - downtown Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, etc.

Hi,

They have a car show at the Pavilions in Scottsdale on Saturdays. I don't know how often. They would, probably be done by the time we would want to start. If they allow a car show, maybe they wouldn't mind us using the parking lot there. There is a Chinese Restaurant or Buffet there as well as a Sweet Tomatoes and a Dennys, so we could meet before taking on the dark side.

Just a thought.

I live in Surprise. You can't get much further from Lost Dutchman than this and still claim to be in the Phoenix metro area. Trust me, I've been to every Phoenix-area GT there has been, and the Lost Dutchman location provided the best quality dark. It's well worth the drive, even for me.

Having said that, I would also like to point out that we've had them at various restaurants, CPFers' homes, and the like, also. The fun of meeting new fellow flashaholics and re-acquainting yourself with others can't be beat, no matter the location.

Would anyone be interested in meeting this Saturday at the Scottsdale Pavilions car show?

Hi,

I would meet, but on short notice, there may not be enough people to make it worthwhile. We probably have to fix a time and place within the pavilions so that we will recognize each other. One of the restaurants, perhaps Dennys, at a given time. Fortunately, Dennys is open 24 hours.

We sometimes go to the car show at 5 or 6 PM Saturday and wander around for an hour or two taking in the sights (and trying to remember where we parked our own car).

We'll be there again this Saturday. If anyone from CPF would like to meet there, it could be fun, I'm sure.

But, it does not have to be only this Saturday. If anyone wants to propose another time or place or date, we'd be interested.

Feel free to PM us if you want our cellphone number.

Regards,
Will

It looks like thunderlight and I will be meeting at the Saturday evening Scottsdale Pavilions Good Guys weekly car show next to McDonald's.

If anyone else is interested in this short-notice meet, please PM for cellphone number.

Beastmaster, can you join us?

Hi,

I enjoyed meeting another CPF member at the car show.

I also enjoyed the venue. It provided an interesting alternative to the "wilderness" experience. You get to use your flashlight to view old cars, old engines in old engine compartments that are frequently dark black. [You can also see how well your flashlights penetrate car windows without getting arrested.] It is an interesting opportunity to see how your flashlight works in an entirely different scenario.

I had purchased a 2C 1940's era flashlight at an antique store earlier that day. Once, I got a replacement screw base bulb and it decided to cooperate, I had the opportunity to use a 1940's era flashight to examine the engine block of a 1940's car. [As well as earlier and later vintage vehicles.]
