Get the 3-mode maratac/itp.

Medium will be fine for 99% of their needs. If you think they can handle knowing about the other modes, show them how it's done, but be prepared to show them again in a month or so.

That's my plan, anyways. Two of my intended recipients will get it right away and might actually use all 3 modes. The others, I'm not so sure, but with Medium being the first mode, it's okay if they forget the light has 2 other modes.

Sorry, I just can't imagine anyone too stupid to get the hang of twisting a 3 level Maratac/iTP type light where it could be seen as too complex or confusing to be given as a gift.

If they can unscrew the lid on a ketchup bottle, tube of toothpaste, or jar of peanut butter, then they can surely figure out the abstract technical complexities and applied physics involved with loosening and tightening the head of a 3 level flashlight... that it will get a different level each time no matter what.

A quick demo and including the instructions should be enough, anything more could be seen as condescending and an insult to the recipient's intelligence.

I wasn't implying that they were too stupid to understand how to change modes -- they're all pretty smart. It's just that if they don't use the flashlight regularly (at least monthly), I don't expect them to remember that the light even has modes.

^ Programmable lights and those with hidden modes are surely too much to try to remember, but unfortunately almost all of the flashlights I have given as gifts-- including very nice expensive ones, end up being long forgotten and unused at the bottom of junk drawers, toolboxes, or glove compartments, at least I pre-loaded them with lithium primaries.

For some reason, non-flashaholics seem to be really impressed with 3, 4, or 6 D cell Mags, and Mini-Mags too, and have been the most appreciated and used as gifts.

you get what you pay for... expecting a lux based AAA light with any sort of quality for $12 is asking way too much these days. You could try looking at DX or KD and take your chances but IMO it isn't worth the difference. There was a time I thought $40 was too stiff for a lux AAA and now they have them around $20 and that makes AAA 5mm LED lights less attractive.

Streamlight Microstream ? The average amazon price is ~ $17 including s&h

If you were willing to consider AA, there's an AA light that I bought for ~ $ 20 for my mother that has been a fantastic all-purpose light. It's sold at Pep Boys, Academy Sports; and it can be purchased directly from Brinkmann by phone. It's not too bright for close-up examination indoors and it's not too dim for lighting up the immediate area around you outdoors. It's a single mode, and in a discussion about this flashlight it was said that the 60 lumen rating is pretty accurate. link: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=237106

And for $ 4 there's this AA light which has been mentioned now and then on this forum:

As far as the iTP and Maratac AAA lights, if the recipient is someone who has large hands then the 2.6" length of the flashlight might be too awkward for that person to hold.

Here's another AAA suggestion. There's a new manufacturer Mrlite. They're going to be bringing to market soon three programmable AAA flashlights. Here's another feature of these lights: among other features, the customer can select the number of modes and the brightness for each mode

One of the models Lipstick (KC-05) will be sold at a cpf price of usd15.5.
