As a Trekker, I've always wanted to own a PADD since I was a child watching The Next Generation, now the dream is coming true.
The iPad is coming out on April 3rd in USA (end of April for our poor country...) and I'm looking forward to buy the 3G version, but I have a big concern: how the heck are we supposed to EDC it?
The first idea that comes to my mind is a shoulder holster, but what about when we don't wear a jacket?
I don't intend to begin carrying a bag, so it should be an "on person" solution...any ideas?
Thanks for the help

LOL sorry, the above is a joke, obviously. I have no clue... grats on getting one though!!!! 😀

LOL, guess I'll wait till 5.11 makes some cargo pants with that option 😀

No need to carry a bag in your hand. Just carry around a small back-pack.

Or, perhaps a modified baby-carrier. You know, one of those things you strap on and then place Jr. into it facing forward; strapped to your chest.

(Who was the @$$ who invented baby-carriers anyway?)

Oh i know a way to do it, but don't tell too many people okay? It seems there is a smaller sized iPad suitable for EDC carry, I heard they call it the iPhone. It has the same features and runs the same applications too. Cool, ain't it? I'm always thrilled by downsizing of everthing thanks to technology advancements...

I had it coming 🙄
Actually I bought an iPod touch almost 2 years ago and I use it as a second device to surf the web and read emails around my house (since my pc is hooked up to an Optoma HD20 projector I try to save some lamp hours), but I've always craved for a Star Trek's PADD sized one that doesn't force me to zoom on every page to read it...

As a tachikoma, can't you just stash it in your pod? More to the point, since the upgrade with Agent functionality, why would you need an iPad anyway...

I guess I'd tend for the shoulder rig with or without a jacket. If not wearing a jacket makes a shoulder holster unacceptable, I guess I don't see how any other options would work either, but you might check out urbanTool's line. (Yeah, it's not good when the best insult for your company is derived from the brand by adding one space, and their "oh-I'm-so-hip" marketing only contributes, but their stuff is actually decent if you can grit your teeth and order it.) Not sure which products would fit, though...

Not to bash the big ***-pocket, of course. Pure genius.

I think its cool, but my wife just gave me a netbook last Christmas. I like having a keyboard.
If I really want an iPad I can always grab one of my old PDA's, it seems to do almost all the same stuff. 🙂

I noticed there is a WiFi version and a Bell subscription version. Does this mean it can be used as a phone too

I love my iPod touch, but this thing really doesn't have a purpose for me. I'd rather have a netbook.

I was going to jump right on the iPad bandwagon. But after seeing it's limitations like no flash, no camera, limited storage, etc. I think I will wait for the HP Slate.

As much as I like my iPhone and iPod touch (2 iPhones and 3 iPod touch) I just detest iTunes. It seems that more often than not it will lock up my computer and I have to do a hard reboot to clear it. The iTunes was the deciding factor, I could actually live with the other limitations.

In my mind it's advantages versus a netbook are small but it takes a big hit in functionality. The size and weight savings don't make much difference when it comes down to actual carry. In exchange I get a device that costs more and delivers less capability than many netbook options. No thanks.

Oh and I detest iTunes since the time I had to manually edit my registry and manually delete files to remove it. It was kind of like malware. It installed other things I didn't want during install (Quicktime) and did everything it could to resist being uninstalled. If iTunes was featured in the movie Waterboy I am sure it would have been described this way.

"iTunes is the devil!"

Acer makes netbooks with proper laptop hardware - I'm typing on one now. When closed, it's about the size of a tall, thin hardback book; 11.6" screen, full size keyboard, Intel Celeron Dual Core, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb HD, for $450-ish; runs HD video, Photoshop, audio editing without flinching, don't try that on an iPad..

For those still sold on/interested in the Apple, nationally syndicated tech guy Leo Laporte has already pre-ordered four iPads, and they'll most likely arrive at his house during his radio show on the weekend, so he's going to do a live on-air unboxing and review..

Leo Laporte's delivery of four iPads arrived just before 11:30 local time, while on the air as planned. His first impressions - it's a bit slippery, though not as bad as a new iPhone. The keyboard is better than the iPhone's, and is nearly full-keyboard sized when in landscape/wide mode. He's currently still syncing it as he'd bought a couple hundred dollars of software in advance.

First adopters are raving about the Scrabble and Air Hockey programs, both of which allow you to play against anyone else nearby who also has an iPad.

Reports from the main Apple store in New York say there's several hundred customers there at any given moment, but the lines are moving very smoothly and efficiently.

Any one pick up one of the IPads.

I understand they are out as of today. Sounds like a affordable computer if you don`t need a lot of on board storage...like me. They look way cool too.

I have an itouch which I love for the portability and fun factor. I also have a decent desktop. So what situations would I be using the ipad instead of either the itouch or desktop PC?
