Are I.P. addresses visible while IMing?

I am wondering, when chatting with somebody via AIM (AOL instant messenger) or Yahoo! instant messenger, is it possible to see the I.P. address of the person you're messaging with and vice versa?

You may be able to do a "whois" or something like that.

It depends on the protocol. I know that with AIM, your IP address is hidden unless you're directly connected. I don't know about Yahoo. Are you trying to find someone else's IP address, or are you worried about someone else seeing yours?

If you're sending the photos via file transfer, then yes. If you're giving them a link to a website (like filmloop), no.

You could probably figure it out with a packet sniffer if the IM software didn't provide IP info.
