With Zebralight or Armytek it is optional, you can choose not to mount it.
I have never used the upper strap on my Zebralight and Wizard Headlamp

Thanks for the info on those two brands. I've always liked the Fenix line of flashlights. I'll have to see if theirs are the same.

i know they make headlamps idk if they have the top strap

if so i believe its optional

You are not obliged to use a specific band.
Look at the diameter of the lights that interest you.
I use a Zebralight headband on an Armytek Wizard Pro.
but I could also do the opposite.

This is true. It's supposed to last 5h on 600lm or 10h on 250lm. I recently replaced the heater matrix on my SAAB 9000 in the dark and 600lm was too bright and I used the 250lm setting. The other alternative is to have a replacement battery ready charged. The battery holder is a 1/8th turn quick release. That way you would get 10h on 600lm and 20h on 250lm.

Of course, you could always charge it while wearing it with the cable attached to a PSU (the phone type battery back-up ones) in your pocket. Also to answer the OP's second question: These 2 models don't have the strap on the top of the head.
