While perusing a kayak forum that I frequent, I stumbled upon a thread about Armor All. The consensus there was that this product is actually harmful to plastic and rubber in the long run. One post claimed that Armor All can actually dry out plastics such as dashboards over long term use. Anyone have any negative experiences with this product? Any good alternatives? I've been using it for years but if there's something better out there I'd like to know.

Supposedly the formula on Armor All has changed in the last few years and it isn't as harmful as it used to be, but I don't take any chances, I don't use it anymore, and haven't for years. I use 303, stuff from Griot's Garage, Meguairs NXT, or some stuff from Meguairs pro line depending what I'm using it for. Check out the forums over at Autopia.org for more info.

I use a product called Natural look from poorboysworld. it is a water based product and shines well. even has a slight nice scent to it.

Before reading any of the replies here I was thinking "303 Protectant". I use it on my Jeep's soft top and plastic fender flares.

303 for me too.

Don't exactly know what the specifics about ArmorAll were, but I'd heard that it actually draws the plasticizers out of the plastic piece it's applied to. Untimately, that causes the piece to harden and get brittle...

How can they continue to sell a such a bodgy product that ultimatly destroys plastic?

On a side note i have used amourall on my shoes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Ooooo. Shiny. But i hope my shoes don't fall to bits. but it works great in the shoe shining department /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Why do you need your dashboard to be shiny? I've never seen the need. Ask any mechanic what they think of cars that are all gooped up with crap like this on their interior plastics, tires, engine bays, etc...

Rally guys in particular hate people who use armor all. Once a previous owner has used it on their dashboards, its all but impossible to get anything to stick to it.

Any products that contain silicone have the potential to damage plastics. The silicone apparently replaces the plasticizers that keep things flexible. The key seems to be once you start using silicone, never stop. Since that is unrealistic for most, cracking is the result. Personally, I use 303 Protectant. Ask any auto body shop and you'll find they never use silicone products.
