Has anyone taken one of these apart? Is the led easy to remove? I wanted to put that pretty blue led into a eddie bauer opto e-light but don't wanna destroy the sapphire just to find I can't pluck out the led.

Actually, I think the problem may be that the Eddie Bauer Opto E-light is red and runs on one miniature lithium cell @ 3 volts, while the Saphire actually contains a stack of 2 Lithium buttons to run the blue LED from 6 volts. So the blue may not work too well in the opto. Craig has a Saphire review at the LED Museum where he mentions replacing the batteries himself; he dissasembled it but doesn't actually say the LED comes out easily.

There are much cheaper ways to obtain a blue LED. They are nornally about $2.50. Electronics Goldmine has 2800 mcd blue LEDs at 2 for $3 this month, but in the 10 I bought there was one iffy one, so if you buy, buy an extra. I personally like these because they seem to be a little darker blue. EG has other blue LEDs, as do All Electronics, Hosfelt, and B G Micro, just to name a few who also sell blue LEDs in small quantities.
