I'm in for one C and one D but only in SS... 😗

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

I did a little testing with my lens and bezel last night. No, I didn't hit anything (or anyone) with the bezel to test it that way, but it is so reflective it helps the beam pattern (maybe). 😎

I put the Melles Griot 01LAG123/066 lens on a 2D M@g driven by a Malkoff Devices 2-3D SSC powered by 2 D Duracells. Note that this LED is not fully driven with 2 D cells, and the SSC has a wider beam pattern so less of the LED light hits the lens than would, say an R2 Cree. :ohgeez:But this is what I have and it is very impressive with this lens.

I compared to a known thrower, the Tiablo A9S, a Wolf Eyes Sniper MP-E and a M@g 85 driven with 9xAA NiMH.

The Malkoff / Lens / Bezel destroyed them all for spot intensity. Even this far from optimal underdriven SSC.

The Wolf Eyes Sniper MP-E has a wonderful pattern and amazing output with pretty decent throw. The Tiablo A9S looks weak by comparison but the hotspot penetrates the Sniper's hotspot by a not too large margin.

The M@g85 makes a LOT of lumens (the most in this test), but the hotspot is not too strong (FM MOP new gen reflector). The projected image of the LED die burns through this 1200 lumen pattern like it wasn't there at all. (Sort of like a 12 gauge vs a .223).

The Malkoff / Lens / Bezel is a very nice setup, probably close to optimal for the head diameter and with the lego capability the M@g is famous for. I really like the round clean pattern when the lens is cranked down beyond the optimal focus. It is a very tight clean spot, rather reminds me of a hollywood spotlight lighting up one small area with artifact free white light. This configuration is probably more useful than the super-throw, but a few turns of the head allows access to either. Having the bezel to protect the lens makes it much more useable without concern for damage to the coating and front lens surface.

I'll have try the lens on some other combinations, but that will have to wait awhile as I need to get back to my other projects...

Thanks, Mike! :twothumbs

Very comprehensive 411 Alan, thank you!

As soon as I get a descent host put together I'll be able to experience this performance first hand.

What's the best driver I could use for a single Cree R2 aspherical?

I currently have one of Wayne's Shark / Remora available and I got the heat sink and R2 covered.

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

I've tried a few different setups with the MG lens and Nano's new bezels, and I have to agree on the Malkoff SSC. IT works great. I have an old Icarus "Space Needle" 2C with a TWOH/VIP750, and it's almost as good.

I can't get Crees to work well. The famous 'Cree ring' is accentuated by the lens. The focused image of the emitter is hotter, but it's surrounded by the irritating rings.

Latest C-Mag Tailcap revision

I just realized that the lanyard hole will have to be relocated or a relief groove cut in order to ensure stability during a tail stand.

Where do I sign up for the D-Mag version ??? :twothumbs

I'm using the SOB 1000 converter powered by two AW 14500s and I really like it. It's a single mode driver but I think in an aspherical Maglite you only need high 😀.

I have not tried Wayne's combo, but it looks very good and I am sure it would work well.

The Crees do often have the rings, and the SSC's are usually a cleaner pattern. But the R2 will have the brightest spot. So you have to decide what is important. I had the Malkoff already. I am going to try it with the P7 when I get that going. It won't be the brightest but it will have lotsa lumens. Probably a great off-focus setup.

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

I'm in for some D-mag Nanotechnology x2

I wish the postman would hurry up with my bezel!!!!:mecry::sigh:

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

donn: Thanks for the heads-up on the Cree rings, but a Malkoff drop-in is just a little too rich for my blood especially when I already have Q5's, R2's & P7's looking for homes.

tx101: I think I really need to start another thread for the fluted tailcaps as soon as possible. Then I can have an official interest list independent of the bezels.

rayman: Another good suggestion 🙂 thank you. The SOB 1000 sounds like the a very practical way to go. I think a Shark / Remora would be a waste of converter on such a simple mod.

Alan B: The Cree rings sound like they maybe a nuisance, but I am willing tolerate them for a hotter spot. As you know I will also be building a P7 aspher so I'll have a couple of good examples for comparison.

I like the way that flows "D-mag Nanotechnology" of course my opinion is just a little bias. :grin2:

Unfortunately, with $9 I could'nt do any better for internation shipping. I hope they arrive next week for you. 🙂

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

Not a problem Nano, that was not a dig at you in any way.

Just feels like being a kid at Christmas and I'm waiting for Santa!

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were. I just know how it feels to wait for international shipments. 🙂

What's the best glow epoxy to use and where can I get some?

Scratch that.

I just order some GlowInc V10 powder and Devcon 2-ton 30-min epoxy. What is the mixing ratio I need for maximum glow!

So what do we call stuff that nano produces?

A nano-bezel sounds like it's for what we Brits would call Action Man's torch and you guys might say is for GI-Joe's flashlight:grin2:

Is this any help to you Nano http://www.glowforum.com/showthread.php?t=40

Is it possible to have them in matt (brushed, satin) finish?

Thanks,
Tanasit

Re: ASPHERICAL LENS PROTECTIVE BEZELS **1ST RUN***SALES**

Very possible! In fact here are a couple bezels I did for Karl.

The exterior finish on these is about a #16 brushed. You'll notice that one has a polished interior surface and the other with the #16 inside.

Is this close to what you had in mind?

Let me offer up nano-phase-mechanical or nanological photonware? I know, now I'm just getting goofy. :shakehead

I think these bezels may also work for the ultra famous British action man James Bond or maybe even Indiana Jones. 😉

Thanks for the glow lead, but I think I found what I was looking for with GlowInc V10 powder and Devcon 2-ton epoxy.

Hi Nanomiser,

I want in for the second run. Deposit sent for one M.G.A.F.T. Bezel high polish. I'm guessing it will be $45 this time, but at least I will have one of these beauties!
(for KD4167)

Thanks

Big thanks to you, Nanomiser. You have some very very happy customers indeed. The shipping and packaging was flawless and robust. The Bezels themselves are absolutely superb! Puts to shame the rest of the torch! This one is a keeper.

I look forward to the completion of your tailcaps with baited breath and open wallet.

Thanks.

That is cool but what about The M.G.A.C.F.S. , can you get in between the fins too?

Putting a #16 brush finish on the M.G.A.C.F.S. bezels is not a problem, but getting in between the fins to do anything is nearly impossible while rotating on the lathe. The space is just too small and would cause anything going into those grooves to hang up quickly and bind probably causing more damage than good to both the bezel and operator.

Just getting to the interior surface was a very tricky situation because the crenellations become the equivalent of rotating teeth which left their mark on more then one of my fingers.

Besides its really not necessary because the finish coming right off of the lathe is just about #16 brushed. I just used a fine grain scotch bright pad to achieve a very clean and smooth #16 brushed finish.

Would you want this brushed finish just on the exterior surface or both outside and inside?
