Hey CPF peoples!!!
I was thinking about getting some tools from Atwood and was wondering what you recommend.
I'm looking for something that has the most possible things in a price range that is no more than 60$ I'm willing to go higher if it really strikes my fancy.
I have been considering the following items:
Area 51 Keyton
Area 51 Micro Bugout bar
Basic Prybaby(do they have an Area 51 version of this?)

on a side note, how do you make the knot that is like the knot shown here: http://www.phlaunt.com/atwoodknives/pics/169815181minisop1.jpg

TIA,
Flash

PS these tools will be used just for EDC and around the House tasks. Do you guys have good luck with Atwood stuff? Does it seem beefy enough to take abuse? Does the steel hold up well? thanks a ton!

You have a good selection there in your list. Peter makes only top notch stuff that you can beat on all day long. He's in the middle of some stuff now, making bigger batches. He uses a lot of S30V steel, and is getting into using some 154CM as well.

thanks pokerstud!
I kind of like the look of the Area 51 stuff, and it seems it may not wear my pockets as bad because of it. What are the advantages/disadvantages to S30V compared to the 154CM steels? I think if I got something of his, I would be able to take it to my HS due to the fact that it doesn't have a blade, and it's not like I'd be using it as an impact weapon</sarcasm>. What are the uses for the Keyton, bugout bar and the prybaby? I kind of only want to get one of them, but will get more than one if budget allows.

Son of Pry Thing and Mini Son of Pry Thing are excellent cutting, prying, opening tools. The workmanship on these are top notch

Hi Flash_Bang!

If I were in your position I would get a Keyton W/ Area 51 grinds. I dont know why but I love the look of that Atwood.

Please let us know what you get.

EDIT: hey CY, I might be interested in your atwood if you would stop editing your posts, thx

Well, I'm trying to stay away from blades on my Atwood due to the complications that could occur if I accidentally leave it in my pocket and go to school. I think I've narrowed it down to the Prybaby and the Area 51 Keyton. I'm edging towards the prybaby due to the more functions, but the keyton has it's appeal due to the area 51 grinds, but the keyton strikes me more as a glorified screwdriver(what other functions does it have?).
TIA,
Flash

PS Does anyone know of a prybaby with Area 51 grinds? If anyone knows Peter well, maybe you could plant that seed into his mind of that type of tool.

I'm willing to bet that Peter would do a one-off Area51 Prybaby, especially since the Prybaby XL already looks a little A51-ish.

Actually I do see one... http://www.phlaunt.com/area51/14065545.php

Come to think of it... I miss my (lost) Wedgie5... wonder if he'll be making more?

Edit: Regarding strength, Peter once said on EDCF that the Prybabies should be able to take any amount of force a single human being can exert on it.

154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.

S30V: An American made and developed premium grade stainless steel created especially for knives. It is a powder made steel with a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties. As a blade material it offers excellent corrosion resistance and superb edge qualities.

Hi! Now I am still a flashlight novice, but I know Atwood tools. I also work in a high school, and I do have both a prybaby and an area 51 mini keyton. Peter has made area 51 prybabies, but he is no longer taking custom orders. He was getting just too overwhelmed. One might pop up on his site now and then, though.

The prybabies still have smooth edges and have never hurt my pockets. He finishes them beautifully. Have you thought about that special edition perforated prybaby? I got one, and it is awesome! It's light in weight, yet still strong. With the bigger size you also get more leverage. The advantage of the prybaby is the bottle opener and also the v-notch. Inside the V is pretty sharp, and it cuts through boxes and packing tape beautifully. I really like that.

The mini keyton is so small you don't notice it among your keys, and it too can handle most things like prying and poking through boxes, etc. You won't go wrong with either. I just see the perforated prybaby still available, and once this batch is gone, I just don't think Peter will be quick to make them again. We begged and pleaded with him at another forum for these, so I am suprised some are still there.

As far as types of steel, Peter does use high quality stuff. I trust his judgment. The 154 looks as nice as the s30v. He finishes his pieces with a bead blast finish. Many love that look, but I prefer a satin finish, so I did put the Dremel to my perforated prybaby.

Good luck. You really can't go wrong with Atwood. I also have some of his damascus pieces (including the original damascus mini prybaby). It is beautiful and useful! Enjoy!

@loveit: okay, thanks!
I think if I do get one, I will get the basic prybaby. The one after that would either be the Area 51 micro bugout bar(if I use the prybaby for prying A LOT), and/or a SOPthing.
Have a good one,
Flash

PS if you guys have atwoods, feel free to email reviews and pros cons etc. to me or talk to me on aim, or even post reviews in this thread or in the review forum. thx!

@carrot: your impression was the same as loveit's, in the way that it's just the lighting or something?

pry-babies are useful, I also got one of the perf ones, and it is quite light.

I would think that if you don't want a sharp edge/knife-like thing, the pry-baby is the most useful of the offerings.

the pry-bars are larger and heavier, not key-chain materials (though useful to have around in a bag or a car).

the son-of-pry thing is also quite useful and because it is heftier it is quite tough, but it does have a sharp edge.

you need to be checking the website, especially if you like the area 51 offerings, it could take quite a while to find what you want exactly.

I think I will be checking the site quite often. I don't think I'll be getting one of the Bug out bars, but the A51 keyton and/or the SOPthing seem promising.
I finally go the hang of the matthew walker knot!!!! yay!!!! Any other knots like it that would be good for lanyards, fobs etc?
TIA and have a good one!
