Australian Outback clothing questions..

I have an Australian outback coat, but it is not waxed/oiled or whatever they do to them to make them waterproof.
I just bought another one, but shorter.
So, my question is:
Can I apply the waterproofing oil/wax myself to the canvas?

You can buy the dressing and do it yourself. I remember seeing it when I was living in Alberta. I think it's called reproofing.
