Automatic knives, valid for use?

Tool is sold separately. MT originally didn't want people messing with them for warranty purposes, that was the reason for the special heads. They then figured that if they make the tool and make it out of titanium that MT fanboys will pay HANDSOMELY for them lol.

$300 for a tool kit?! At that price, I'd rather buy another knife if a screw comes loose on a Microtech.

The problem is, where I live, it will be a desk queen only.

DA auto is the only way to go. Having to manually close the blade kinda defeats the purpose IMHO.

I only have two autos at this point. One an old "NATO" OTF and a Halo V I bought new years ago. Once in a blue moon I carry the Halo V in a custom kydex belt holster. I prefer fixed blade or assisted openers in general, but for the size and weight, sometimes the H5 really comes in handy in the summer months. It's a lot more substantial of a weapon than most of my assisted or unassisted openers.

So these dang things are just starting to multiply on their own lol. Picked up this merlot one at Blade Show last weekend for a price I couldn't pass up. Plan is to swap the bronze blade/hardware from the black Troodon I have to this one. I LOVE the way bronze and red or merlot looks together and I've never seen one from them done in that combo before.

To answer your question, yes they are a viable option. I have a couple switchblade knives, but don't carry them very often. I find my Kershaw with the thumb stud just as easy and fast to open. I do think switchblades are cool though.

both knives that I carry daily are automatics. Protech TR3 for general stuff, Microtech combat troodon for personal protection.
The advantage of an OTF dagger is, unlike a folder, if it fails it just goes back into the handle, not on to your fingers, makes perfect sense if carrying a fixed blade dagger is not an option. Plus Microtech's are phenomenally well built, fairly ergonomic and with the combat troodon, there's no chance of it 'going off' in your pocket. Love mine.

I carry and use mine frequently, although I don't think their price justifies them over a quality assisted opener.

Before I found the Deadlock from Hawk Knife Designs, I wasn't comfortable with the strength of OTFs. Microtechs we're ok but I preferred my Emerson wave designs for one hand quick draw. The Deadlocks were a game changer for me and I daily carry them now.

They are both C models. The top is last years release.

That is actually pretty good chapstick they include in their orders.

I bought the all titanium model in November, but as much as I like the tumbled finish I'm not sure I like the feel as well as the aluminum. I figured the titanium would show less use over time and it is still awesome. I prefer the previous models slightly for less cost.

My home state recently legalized autos. I've owned a few over the years, and cjrrently have a couple each otf and side opening autos. I love my Microtechs, but there's no quiet way to open or close them. My Protech side openers, on the other hand, can be opened and closed as quietly as any manual knife if needed. In a restaurant, for example. Sometimes everybody doesn't need to know what you have with you. Not everybody cares about this aspect, but remember: just because you have the right doesn't make it right. Sometimes not advertising is the better plan. I make the same argument against open carry, which is legal here, too.
