I got my first 18650s and a Pila charger two days ago and I charged them. Today I bought a multimeter and tested them at 14.5 volts and 14.3 volts respectively. I put them back in the charger and hit the reset buttons. The charging indicators went green in a few minutes and I left them in the charger with the lid open for another 30 minutes. They now both test at 14.5. I expected at least 14.7 based on the reading I have done. Are these readings normal for brand new batteries?

PS I havent been able to cyle them in a light yet as I'm waiting for the delivery of the 18650 carrier for the Olight SR 51 I just received.

14.5? 14.3? 14.7? I don't get it. You should be reading between 4.1 and 4.18 V OCV after the charge cycle has finished. (It drops from 4.2V a little after the charge current stops).

Ha, that's what I get for having a glass of wine while operating a cheap multi meter. You are correct sam, the readings were 4.5 and 4.3. after "topping off" they are both 4.5.

So, given the error of my first post, is 4.5V OK?

4.5V is not right... It's WAY too high!
They should go up to 4.2V max (give or take 0.05V)
Are you sure you're not reading 4.15? That would be perfectly acceptable, and to be expected coming out of the pila.
In fact, I can almost guarantee your Pila isn't charging the cells up to 4.5V!!!
See this: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?325884-Charger-settings-a-test for some good info too, btw.

It should read 4.2v or less.
Samgab beat me by one minute.

Multimeter could also be off. Giving you a false reading. Has it been checked recently. And no more wine for you.

Don't forget to allow for any inaccuracy in the readings from your cheap multimeter.
Norm

Edit: Too slow 🙁

Again, my bad. 4.15V is the reading fresh off the charger.

I'll go sleep it off and follow up tomorrow. Thanks. 😗

Lol... 4.15V is perfectly fine. Exactly what you would want to expect.
I think Li-ions and wine don't mix... 😀

Thanks sam.

I'll put the batteries away until tomorrow.
