batteries and cold weather...

Hey Everybody,

I'll probably be purchasing a PT Surge and SureFire E2 in the near future. I live in Rochester, NY and we get cold, snowy winters. I will be using my lights year round for walking the dog outside as well as using the lights indoors. I have a few questions about batteries. I'm confused about which type of batteries work well in the cold (walking the dog in winter) and which type don't. With alkalines, rechargable alkalines, NiCad, NIMH, Lithium, etc. I'm a bit confused

By the way, when I say "cold weather"...I don't mean 40 below zero arctic blast weather. I mean 20 degrees above zero (Farenheit) being used to pick up my dog's "business" and then put back in my jacket pocket.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure about the others, but alkaline batteries should work ok for you. They are not all that affecte by the cold.

You will enjoy your SureFire E2. I recommend getting the E2-HA (Hard annodized finish). Costs abit more but the finish should last longer and I think it feels better and looks better. The SureFire can eat up some batteries! It puts out about the same amount of light as a 2 D cell halogen light. You can get batteries at lower cost buying them in bulk - or if you use your light sparingly - Wal-Mart sells their lithium 123A batteries - 2 to the package for about $10.

A light you might want to consider for your normal activities is the Princeton TEC Attitude. About the same size as the E2 but made of high impact plastic, has 3 LEDs and powered by 4 AAA cells. Should last 150 HOURS of run time on one set of batteries. The batteries are much less expensive and easy to find. Puts out a night white light and more than enough for walking the dog. I love mine.

Brian, I surely hope you didn't mean that you put your dog's "business" in your jacket pocket! You would have to get yourself a light that is either waterproof or highly water-resistant! Not to mention a finish that withstands harsh chemicals!

Ranger, the E2 puts out 60 whole Lumens. A 2D can surely offer about 30 at most. The 3D Mag achieves about 30-35 Lu.
