If I modded my Thor with a HID bulb and ballast, would I be able to swap out the 12v SLA with lighter batteries of some type so that the Thor would be less of a brute to carry around?

You could go to a 3 AH battery for comparable runtime as an unmodded THOR, but I'd recommend finding a smaller ligth to start with - the THOR has lots of stuff which make it heavy, like the rubber ring on the front, etc.

A 3AH SLA would be a bit of an improvement but I was thinking more along the lines of Ni cad "D" cells or Nmhi "D" cells. I wanted to HID mod the thor mainly because of the size and quality of its reflector plus the ample room for the mod (especially if I fitted it with an alternative power source). The original weight was the primary negative about this mod

db,

I'm thinking that starting off with a smaller host is the way to go. Cramming D cell NiCD's in there will reduce the weight a bit, bit it will still remain a huge clumsy light. If you extrapolate this to the X990 which uses NiMH (with a 70 minute runtime), it's still a pretty heavy light (about 7 lbs) and also a bit clumsy (without as nice of a spot as the Thor). Eh, I think the 2 hour runtime of the Thor is pretty useful, trying to reduce the weight a bit will likely be very hard. Starting with a smaller host may be easier.

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of using a smaller host for a 35w HID mod. Do anyone have any suggestions as to a suitable host?

The Harbor Freight 3MCP light will be on sale March 1-2 for $12.99. Basically 75% of a Thor, now for 1/2 the price. It weighs about 6 or 7 lbs if I recall. 5 AH SLA still makes it pretty heavy, but not as bad as the 12 lb THOR
