Battery pack construction

Hi, New here with my first question.
I have a pair of Bell South GMRS/FRS radios. The battery pack is four AAA shrink wrapped cells(4.8V-600Ah) that have a back contact plate in order to use the base charger. I was wondering if it would be possible to construct one on your own as AAA NiMH cells can be had very cheaply. However, the instructions always say do not solder the battery contacts. Thanks.

There are "tabbed" cells (solder tab spot-welded to the terminals) that are meant for making battery packs - those would be a better choice than consumer-type cells (designed to fit a holder for standard AAA cells).
