OK, newbie. I have been reading up on this but am confused. I am interested in building a dcell mag with a P7 dropin. what batteries are best for this and where can I get a battery pack to hold said batteries?? or is the only option to make your own?? And.. what is the best size mag host to start with? If I can make a super bright light out of a 2 cell host that would be more desirable than a 4 cell, but I am confused about the whole battery part/ boring out ect. any info appreciated thanx

I am new to this too but for a 2D host, WIHOUT boring, you can use 6xAA adapter from Fivemega or 2x18650 with a homemade or purchased adapter. I will say that all the 18650 adapters I have seen are super ghetto. Fivemega's AA packs are really nice and allow you to charge the cells all at once.

The Malkoff P7 drop in is designed for 5v~13v. I would not bother with Lio-on 18650's. I have a 2D Maglight running a P7 with 3 NiMH C cells. Yes 3 NiMH fit the 2D body perfect, just trim the spring on the tail cap a bit.:D

You could get a 4D Maglight and run 4 NiMH D cells or 6 NiMH C cells. You will get easily over 2 hours of 700 plus runtime with no drop in output.

Mine with 2.8amps initially, then after 2:02 hours it still read 2.8amps and the 3 NiMH cells had gone from 1.4v to 1.25v.:devil::whistle: (NiMH can be used down to .8

Go with the bigger cells it will be way more efficient and you will have flat lumen curves with long runtimes.

Totally shameless plug here:

(there's a link in my sig line to this place on the forum where I may or may not sell said adapters, :) )

To quote MalkOffdevices: "It is fully regulated and will operate on 5v to 13v input. Current draw is 1800ma at 6v and 1000ma at 12v. Two or three lithium rechargeable or six to nine NIMH batteries are ideal to power this Lamp Assembly."

Not sure how close to full output it would run on 3 NIMH cells, but it would definitely not be operating at full potential.

6AA would guarantee regulation through the discharge and should deliver over an hour of runtime on most good AA NIMH cells.

if I run three nimh c cells in a two dcell mag, wont the c cells flop all over the place inside?? do you use a battery holder or something?

While we're on this subject, what seems to be the best way to power a P7 in a mag 3D? I have an incan 3D that is just crying out for a P7 but I'm not sure if I want to go the cheap way an DD a P7 or if I can justify the money/time to regulate/sink it. I've spent many hours searching a bunch of threads and now I'm just a little overwhelmed.

also it seems to me that even 4 d nimh cells would not deliver the optimal 6 volts that molkoff states to be optimal, if you wanted full power going that route, you would need a 6 cell body to reach potential. I think I will go with a 2d host with the 6 cell adaptor, smallest body with required output.

You can do a 2D body with 3x25500 or 2x26650/26700...
