i've decided to try to take apart milwaukee 24volt battery pack for the cells inside. are there any tips, suggestions, or precautions i should know before start taking it apart? i would like to be able to use the 7 imr 26700 cells to power a project or two. i'm hoping this starts some modding adventures. any help would be greatly appreciated. i don't want to ruin the cells right at the start.

afaik there is no milwaukee 24volt battery pack, there are18v nicd, nimh and 28v lithiums.
28v li ion, i'm 99% sure, uses 18650 cells

when you take a pack apart, make sure don't damage cells wrapping, and don't short them, carefully brake off the tabs, or better yet cut them close to the weld point so they don't stick out, leave them, they wont add much of length, protected cells are even longer (those cells you remove are unprotected),

Also, from what I understand they are low capacity 1200-1300mAh high discharge 6-12A rated so may not be good for standard lights (may be useful for something custom like you have in mind though).

Here a link to some good info on the similar pack Ryobi makes

http://www.toolboyworld.com/eBay/Ryobi_Batt_Rebuild.htm

I have 10 from a Ryobi pack and they were IMR's, but no use for them, would gladly send them to someone who could use them or test them for :poof:s

Hope this helps some

Cheers

yes, my mistake it is a 28 volt pack.

so far i only took case apart and the cell read "MOLI FSPE70045.0106 14 IMR-26700A MADE IN CANADA" (caps as on the cells, not to make a point).

the battery pack is in working order. i didn't have the correct charger and i tried a couple different bulbs(mag-6 and rop lo), but they just popped and i needed to reset the pack.

i thought that i "might" have enough stock lights at this time and maybe these cells could power something in an old 5c or 6c mag that was just hanging around waiting for some attention.

i have read a lot of threads(maybe to the point of overload) and would like to try some modding.

if i try to start cutting the pack apart, do i need to worry about tripping any individual cell protection or is it just the pack itself that is protected? while it was stock, i needed to recharge/reset the unit after i blew the bulbs.

thanks again for any help,

got all the cells out intact and reading 4.o volts each. they all have a cardboard/paper sleeve on them that stops them from fitting in an older 5c mag. removing the sleeve allows it to fit, but it is an all metal body on the cell except for a plastic spacer ring at the positive end. maybe ok for a single cell. i'm not sure what i could wrap them in that would fit the older mag.

damn i was wrong, never seen a pack with 26700 before, but i guess i have not seen everything.
as for protection, i'm guessing they are not protected individually, there is a circuit in the pack that takes care of protecting each cell.

you could wrap them, battery space sells shrink wrap in various sizes, i use it to re-wrap 18650 i get from laptop batteries, or any other cells with damaged wrapping.

heat gun is a good thing to use, but blowdrier, on high, works ok too.

You'll need to put some shrink-wrap on those bare cells for safety. if it somehow wears through your anodizing on the inside of the flashlight you could have a short circuit. better safe than sorry...

Now that the cells are out and free and on their own, they can deliver enormous current without any restriction from the protection circuit, a short circuit can make fire pretty fast with that much oomf.

thanks for the link. those look like they are a good idea. what would be a good to charge these? mod or adapt an "ultrafire" type charger or step up to a hobby type? next step is to make a couple of plans. plan a- kick butt led mod, bright, multi-level, long running and not small. plan b- kick butt incandescent mod, bright and throwy, multi-level.

how many of these cells would fit in a 6d mag with fm's new 4.5 inch para 36 head...would this be a good use of these cells? i even have a couple of his extensions for the mag.

D cells are 60mm long, the ones you pulled are 70mm long from the label information. Should be able to fit 5 into a 6D.

:oops:Sorry alpg88 but you are 100% incorrect... The cells in MILWAUKEE V28
packs are "MOLI" 26700.
