Battery size history

I googled but none of the sites I got came up with had any historical perspective of battery sizes. Wikipedia sites do not have historical information.

Like, when was the "AA" size battery invented? Who invented it and for what original purpose? How about the "CR123A", who first developed it and when was it first marketed and for what original purpose? Any patents on these battery sizes?

Any information or websites with these information greatly appreciated.

I've wondered about the same question myself. The origin of battery sizes seems to be shrouded in the mists of time. Today's sizes seem to have been common internationally at least since the 40's as far as I can tell. Many old sizes have disappeared, but the ones that survive are unchanged.

according to Flashlight Museum website: In 1896, the "D" cell battery was invented .


Can't seem to find this fact in that Wikipedia link.
Did i miss it ?


I'd like to know when (year) the various sizes were introduced.


According to History Channel's "Modern Marvels",
the 9-volt (transistor) battery was introduced in 1956.


Anyone know about the other sizes ?
