Looking for a 18650 thrower, for outdoor walks to the beach etc. Not really on a tight budget but my wife does wonder if I'm a little nuts!

At that price point you have a good many choices, and probably the best place to start is with Selfbuilt's multi-emitter round-up review:

Also, one of the very best places to see side-by-side beamshot comparisons is in this thread: http://fonarevka.lux-rc.com/
Just pick a scene, then click on the various torches in the list to see that scene illuminated by the torch you have selected. Ultra-informative!

Finally, I would also recommend that you take a close look at the Jetbeam RRT-3 with the new SST-50 emitter. I'm just waiting for one of the CRF heavy-hitters to do a solid review before I pull the trigger on this beauty myself.

Good hunting, and :welcome:

Thanks Buckley. Have a new RRT 3 but flickered on high. Sent back and waiting.... I was thinking of a single 18650. Like Jhanko but impossible to find. How about a Mcgizmo?

I think you are willing to spend too much money on a flashlight, you can buy 2 high quality lights for that price, one for what you need and another one to EDC.

These are my suggestions

Single 18650 thrower:
Jetbeam RRT-1
Tiablo A10

2x 18650 thrower:
Eagletac M2XC4
Thrunite Catapult

3x18650 thrower
Legion SST50

6x18650 thrower
Olight intimidator SST90

9x18650 thrower
Just kidding, get an HID spotlight, L35 or L70.

I have both RRT1 and the M2XC4 and they are great throwers. both one of the best thrower in their class.

The DEFT FTP will throw like crazy, but I'm not too sure you need that much throw for what you're doing.

Maybe a Dereelight DBS V3 with a Nailbender SST-50 3 level pill installed.

+1

also consider the dereelight, if i was to choose between single 18650 throwers, it would be my top choice, mainly because you can modify or drop in a different emitter easily. also, it has options, such as single or multi-mode. the jetbeam RRT-1 would be next (love that selector ring on my RRT-0).

i have a catapult, and honestly its too heavy for casual extended walks. its a great light, especially for the price, but the first few days i had it, i didnt have a holster and carried it in my hand, and after an hour or two, you will feel the weight. ive had the light for about 2 weeks now, and it still brings a smile to my face when i use it. my friend has a jetbeam m1x, and the catapult's beam, and output surpass' it, the tint is cooler then the m1x, and i prefer the UI of the m1x. but the feel and built of the catapult i like more. also the catapult can run on either 1 or 2 18650s.

How come you need a thrower for a walk on the beach?

Seriously, when I go walking, I like the nice floody beam that lights up the area. Even the floodiest beam is sufficient to see 100 feet off with ease with 200 lumens or more. Any light with a P7, MC-E, or SST-50 will produce 400 or more lumens, which is more than sufficient for pretty good visibility at a distance.

High throw just means a searing small hotspot on the sand reflecting back up at you, where you can't see anything else around you due to the lack of spill.

I'd seriously reconsider the "high throw" if this is your use case. Maybe one of the cheap Romisen flood-to-throw lights. 25 bucks or so and you can adjust it so you can get pure floodlight for seeing where you are going and lighting up the area, or adjust to see something way off.

McGizmo doesn't do 18650.

However, an older HD45 upgraded to a modern LED will have plenty of throw and can be bored out to use an 18650. This will be reasonably inexpensive (for a McGizmo) and be worth your time and effort.

+1 on this light. Mine takes an 18650. It has the most perfect beam of any light I have experienced! That McGizmo quality is felt the first time one holds the light. Nice suggestion upgrading the LED, have to look into that.

Still it is very nice like it is.

Thanks everyone!! Live near the beach in S W Michigan and love to walk at nite. It is wooded above and it's fun to appreciate the "reach" of a good thrower. Love the new Jetbeam RRt3 so far but it's a bit much for longer walks in terms of weight. Would love that kind of light (or close) in a smaller package, like a single 18650. New to this so battery options are open.

Might not be the most throwy light, but for what you want it for it would well do the job.

Fenix TK30. Can run on either single 18650 or two. I use a TK40 (same head as TK30, AA powered) to walk the dog and only use it on high mode (about 270 lumens) and it is plenty bright for seeing what that thing is up ahead.

The TK30 does 370 lumens on one 18650 and 630 (570otf) lumens on two in turbo mode.

Massive hotspot and a good, usable spill. Good thing is you don't have to use all that light all the time. Plenty of modes to choose from so you can stop and look at seashells without blinding yourself.

An option would be a solarforce L2p body with a nailbender XR-E drop-in(perhaps with neutral/warm white) which would cost you a total of ~60$ and give great quality.

I'm surprised no one had mentioned the Elektro Lumens DeCree-XPG, 300 lumens OTF with a 5.5 degree optic.
It IS nice, but perhaps I fiddled with mine too much, my optic popped off at one point and I had to glue it back on again(yes, it was glued on originally). Since then, the beam has never been the same:oops:.

Thus why I'm more or less religiously dedicated to P60 drop-ins and hosts. Less parts to pop off. A Surefire host with a Malkoff drop-in would be a rock solid combination. Probably not a "thrower" kind of thrower, but it's my personal opinion that people, even flashaholics, have little use for a thrower. After playing around with my lights, I figure if it throws enough to see the other side of the park at night, it throws far enough for me.

Better than any thrower flashlight would be a high powered green laser pointer. Not only will you appreciate the beam that you can see clearly in the night sky, it'll throw all the way up to the moon(okay, maybe not that far).
