i seem to remember it being by some company named like lessiese, but that is a horrible murdering of the spelling. anyone care to help me?

Lava is great butane, refined 5 times. I use King as my standard butane (3x refined), and Lava in my better lighters.

+1 on Colibri. I have been using it since the guy at the local cigar shop told me too. Please do not use Rons@n. Please....

Apparently Ronson butane contains oil and that plugs up modern lighters. The old Ronson Varaflame lighters (e.g. Windlites) would like it though because their "wick" works better when they are oiled.

I used Ronson butane in the past and every butane lighter I tried would cease to work after one or two refills, except my Windlites. Since I stopped using Ronson, all my lighters work okay.

I get my butane on eBay. The size of the cans keep changing but they are large and they work for me.

I've also had good luck with this seller, but they were a different brand of butane:

Thanks for that explanation eluminator.

I noticed that a lighter I got from DX didn't work as well after refilling (with "Newport extra purified butane lighter gas"). Some people have said it's due to a lower pressure in butane refill cans. Is that the case, and if so, how come, since when the lighter is full the butane is liquid, which should be uncompressible at any given temperature. Right?

I use my lighter mostly while camping. I picked up an adapter for the gas cans that I use with my stove and fill my lighter from them.

Primus is one of the brands, but I just noticed that Snow Peak uses a mixture of butane and LPG which they report works better at cold temperatures. I don't think this mixture has any effect on the lighter, but it is too early to tell for sure.

Prior to this I used Colibri, but the gas can adapter is more compact and weighs less than the refill can, so I just changed over.

Are there any issues with using stove fuel in a lighter?

I think that camp stove fuel is pretty pure. At any rate, none of my stoves have clogged up.

I had a little gas stove that clogged up recently, when I poured water over it. (Trying to heat water in a "paper cup", actually an origami box - it got too soggy. Would have worked otherwise.) Until things dried out the gas was coming out the air inlet holes in the mixer below the head instead of out the burner head.

King butane is one of few triple filtered fuels and it is available at walmart. This discussion has been hashed out on other forums and King seemed to come out on top.
