Best? Man... who knows? I used to live in Dallas and they had a couple big guitar shows every year and some of the guys there that no one had ever heard of were just unbelievable! And I've seen quite a few of the bigger name guys in informal settings... Eric Johnson. He was enough to make any apsiring guitarist just want to cry. Allan Holdsworth. He almost made me feel like I was playing a different instrument. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are just too virtuosic for words - again like Holdsworth, though I've been playing for almost 25 years, they make me feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of what can be done.

I've seen Yngwie three times and he's... absolutely overwhelming. His sound can be so agressive. But... ARGHHHHH! Sometimes it's hard to take. And a lot of those guys - Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert, Chris Impoletteri, David Chastain, the guy from Stradovarious. They are awesome, but kinda... uh... well, it gets old eventually.

I don't think any of them are seriously in contention for 'best guitarist ever' but my favorites are Randy Rhoads (my number one inspiration esp Mr Crowley, Revelation Mother Earth, Goodbye to Romance, You Can't Kill Rock and Roll, Diary Of A Madman)and David Gilmour (favorite probably would be Comfortably Numb from Delicate Sound of Thunder and that album in general). Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham are also way high on my list. Not overly flashy but they can really play.

and there's more not yet mentioned...

Chet Atkins- a huge inspiration to many that followed
James Burton ('Hello Mary Lou' and Elvis' live band)
Mike Campbell- Tom Petty's Heartbreakers
Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King and Steve Gaines, all brilliant with the discipline it takes to play in a 3-guitar band, in my mind the best American Band EVER!...
Joe Walsh- made those Eagles soar even higher...
Neil Young- watch the vid to 'Cinnamon Girl' to see what he can do, the guy's sound is just extra-dimensional...
Dave Grohl- textures, great sound...
and how about the Rev Billy Gibbons?

Again, none of these excellent men could replace each other,
so they're ALL the BEST EVER at what they do!

Hi CromagNet,

by not yodelling, Gary Hoey may have improved the tune for many...

a few more personal favorites:

Mick Jones- (Foreigner) with just one guitar, he blew 'em away...
Steve Jones- Sex Pistols Rock Stylist, HE was DA MAN...
Aussie legends Rob Riley (Rose Tattoo),
and the Brewster brothers (The Angels)
Dutchman George Kooymans (remember 'Radar Love'?)
and on the Golden Earring live album, Dutch Bluesmaster Eelco Gelling...

Current styles don't include solo's, that leaves "the best guitar player" monniker to the Vai's and Satrianis.
The guys above are all just a part of the music, but, in my mind the BEST part....

'Teach your children well', that was Jerry on the lap steel...

some easily overlooked 'hired guns':

Tim Pierce- Rick Springfield, the Corrs, Faith Hill
John McCurry-John Waite, Alice Cooper (the 'Poison' opening riff!)
Audley Freed- Cry of Love, Black Crowes
Snowy White-Thin Lizzy, Peter Green(!), Pink Floyd
Tim Palmer-Chris de Burgh, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Paul McCartney
Tommy Emmanuel-Australian session ace and fingerstyle maestro

Check out any of the above and you won't come away dissapointed, they're all crackin' guitar slingers -fill them Christmas stockings!

Oh yeah Don, Ten Years After was Alvin Lee's band

I'm goin' home, choo bah, choo bah....

Is Jose Feliciano considered a good gutarist?

Man, I am terrible with remembering names, places and events and I couldn't hold a tune if my life depended on it! I don't listen to music nearly enough but I just want to say that my hat goes off to all of the musicians who can ply their trade and give us all art to listen to and the effect it can have on our state of mind and well being is such a wonderful gift!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif I think we all have a song inside of us that is just crying to get out. Vicariously through these masters, we are given a chance to feel and move with that which we can't articulate ourselves; or at least many of us can't! The power of music and rythum is so strong it blows my mind! We all want to dance and it is thanks to the folks listed in this thread and others that we are given the music with which to do so. It comes as no surprise to me that the term Rock Star is used often and well beyond the confines of music as a label for one who has excelled. Mastering the energy in light is cool but mastering the energy in sound is devine, IMHO!

Having grown up in Chicago during the 80's, I came to know Rick Nielson from Cheap Trick. He is extremely talented, but my favorite guitarist would be Stu Heiss from Resurrection Band also from Chicago. We have spent a lot of time with REZ. It was a long 30 years.
