I am looking for a the best and possibly brightest led drop in for a 6D cell mag. I remember that Malkoff used to make a 3 led model, but unfortionatly, they no longer do. I was looking at the terralux TLE 300M-EX. is there anything better or brighter?

Here's a semi-comprehensive maglite LED/incan drop-in/mod thread. A little out of date...I'd guess Malkoff will have something in the works to fill the roll of his triple drop-ins (which up until recently had been replaced by the SSC P7 drop-ins) but as of now, it does look like the terralux is the brightest stock drop-in you can get. Depending on your budget and intended use for the light I might wait for an offering from Malkoff, as it will be very high quality, but with no word for sure whether he has anything in the pipeline, it's up to you pretty much. Anyway, hope that helps, good luck.

Hummm, the P7 drop-in were there a week ago. I'll update it now.

You can also go for one of the mods but that is more work.

TLE-300M-EX seems to be the brightest but whether it's the best depends on what you are going to use it for. The lack of focussing ability (due to having to take out the reflector) turned me off somewhat. But I figure anyone with a 6D (myself included) is prepared to put up with a little impracticality.

i painted my 6D bright orange and it holds the terrallux. it sits in a location in the house where i always know where it is, and if it is out of its normal location (family member uses it) i can always see it easily and put it back where it should be..

when used outside its almost as bright as any of my p7s or mc-e / expensive lights. sure its a weird *slightly* kinda bluey/purple tint, but it produces a huge amount of light.

if you have a 6d, and want it to be a very bright flashlight, and cheap $65.

i believe the terralux is a good option.

if you need perfect tint and beam profile go ahead and get a $120 dropin.

i have the terralux, i was playing around last night on a football(soccer) pitch, it would light the whole thing up - awsome. the only thing to consider is there is a new multimode slightly brighter version coming out.................

I just got that new one (TLE-300M EX) the other day having already had the old one (TLE-300M) for a while. The new one is brighter (apparently by 100 lumen) but it isn't immediately obvious when looking at the light. Also the multimode function could get irritating rather quickly (each time you turn the torch on it is in a different mode). The hotspot is still jagged and weird, but a different kind of weird from the old model and the grey/silver colour of the drop-in doesn't go as well with a black maglite as the black of the old model.

I just got the new Terralux TLE-300M-EX for my 4 D cell Maglite and it's nice. I agree with what Rty778 said about the beam pattern. It's all jagged and weird. It's not a smooth, even spot like what you'd see from other high performance LED lights.

The new silver color of the EX version looks great in my silver 4 cell Maglite, but I agree with Rty778 that it would look strange in a black 6 cell Mag.

Do you mean to say that the light changes mode every time it switches on and off regardless of how long the light has been off? I was under the impression that it always started on high.

For example, if I was to use the light on high tonight, and I turn it off, Are you saying that when I turn it on tomorrow night it will start up in Medium tomorrow night?

I was considering one of these but if I'm understanding your statement correctly, I want no part of it. Please clarify.

I would try finding a P7 Malkoff from the marketplace if you can find one. I love mine and it is by far the brightest dropin I have seen. The P7 seems to work very well in the Mag reflectors. Gene hasn't had them on his site for a while (several weeks). I hope he has something good in the works to replace...

My Terralux TLE-300M-EX starts up on high after it has been turned off for a little while. I haven't timed it to see exactly how long it has to be off before it restarts back up in the high mode, but I'd estimate about a minute or two.

In the above situation, mine starts in high mode.

I was out in the yard tonight playing with my Maglite 4D with the new Terralux TLE-300M-EX drop in upgrade and I *finally* figured out the UI for changing the light output modes. To go from high-medium-low, you have to press the on/off switch very quickly. If you don't have a fast thumb, it may be hard to change the modes at first. It just takes some getting used to. It's not a huge deal though because it will default to the high mode after the light is left off for a short while as I mentioned before.

Note that the TLE-300M-EX has a rather "floody" beam pattern. It's not a tight, pencil beam at all because of the three LEDs. I like floody beams though, so it's just what the doctor ordered for my Maglite because it has a wide beam without the much despised donut hole that all stock Maglites produce when set on flood.

For comparison, the TLE-300M-EX beam's hot spot is much wider than that for my Fenix TK40.

I currently have a 6D with a Rop High bulb running from 6 x 10Ah LSD's.

Can anyone tell me if the Terralux TLE-300M EX would be brighter than this setup?

Also, comparative runtimes? I think my ROP currently would be good for over 2 hours.

Don't really care about throw just wall of light for this one.
