I have a few questions.
1) What would give the best runtime?
2) Where can they be bought?
3) How long would these run with a DB 1000?
4) What type of charger?
5) How much money are we talking?

Well, I don't have any experience, but I'm going to try using Battery station R123's and a downconverter just like you.
Also JSBurlys has R123's
Waion (I think, maybe it's AW) has some as well he sells with the nano charger. These are UNPROTECTED lithium-ion so they can be damaged by over discharging.

here's three basic options with 2C m*g.

1. 3x Cr123
2. 2x C nmh
3. 2x 18500 with protection circuit

all three requires different boards. here's a pic of protected 2x 18500

How about two Pilas 150s's? they are about the same dimension as 3 123's and have very flat discharge curve. Or even better, two 150a's which are fatter but the same lengths as 3 123's.

I'm using (2) Pila 150A's in my 2C nFlex modded Mag. It works great.
