Better use your Circuit City Gift Cards Now

I stopped by the store yesterday. No great deals for the most part. I think several (maybe all, not sure) of the big ticket items were ten percent off but this is from full msrp. Some of the accessories were 30 percent off. I wonder if the sale amounts will vary from store to store.

10% seems to be the norm now. Although our local CC has a street hawker with a 30% sign. The only things at the 30% markdown were returns and some accessories. No good deals yet. The eneloops are still maked $15.99 for 4 AA.

They are stating the reason for going bankrupt is the "bleak economic situation". Hogwash!!! Circuit City, at least the local stores here anyway, have the WORST customer service I have ever experienced as a retail consumer. I get better and more polite customer service at the DMV or even the city courthouse.

I'm glad to see them succumb to the natural forces of the "free" market. Good riddance!

+1 Although my local Best Buy isn't much better.

The downside of this of course is less competition, likely higher prices. It could also have a domino effect. If a few big box anchor stores like Circuit City in malls close, then the smaller shops may follow. Granted, I won't miss Circuit City, either, but now we have another 34,000 people out of work.

Yeah, I have a feeling Best Buy might be next.

Brick and mortar consumer electronics stores just don't make a whole lot of sense anymore. Nowadays their only market is the impulse buyers and people who don't know how to operate a web browser. So, I would have to say that unless the internet disappears or somehow becomes a bad place to buy consumer electronics, the fall of Best Buy is inevitable.

Fry's on the other hand might survive, they do it right.

Or less illusion of competition lol. Here bestbuy is owned by another elelctronic store futureshop. They open store next to each other, sell pretty much the same stuff for the same price, even their weekly flier have the same stuff on sale for the same price.

It's the other way around...Best Buy bought Future Shop in 2001.

Circuit City also owns The Source (formerly Radio Shack) here in Canada.
Word is that The Source is actually profitable and several parties are interested in buying it.

I'd like to see Radio Shack re-acquire it and return it to the Radio Shack we used to have before Circuit City got hold of it.

I don't care for the source anymore, since it's now cellphone and laptop shack. I went to looking for a connector that can handle 1 amp and is made so can only be plugged in one way polarity wise, the guy looked at me like I was speaking another language.

I've seen one post that said liquidators are involved so the item that used to sell for $100.00 may now be marked at $150.00 and sold at $110.00.
Tell your friends.

I agree that the present economy played little in their failure.

I've expected their demise ever since they laid off all their senior employees and offered to rehire them as new hires in order to save expenses. I haven't purchased anything from them since.

I even have one of their credit cards, which has sit dormant since then.

Here's someone that feels similar.

I remember that stunt. One of the most disgusting business practices ever. :(

Good riddance. Enterprises like that I don't need.

Wow, that is funny. As bad as Circuit City can be I guess you haven't spent much time at the Fry's stores that started it all in the Bay Area. I can't think of worse customer service. Most of the employees speak what they think of as english as a second or third language. The first time I walked into the Fry's in Oregon I was amazed at the difference between it and the Bay Area. The one in Phoenix must be like the one in Oregon.

The whole Circuit City thing to me looks like the big bosses want to take the money and run. They are not in a huge financial bind. They were looking to cash out and couldn't find anyone willing to buy the company. Now they fold their tent and leave 34,000 people on the street while they drive off in a dumptruck loaded with cash.

Bad neighborhood = bad employees. (Sarcastic, joke, no offense to no-cal types (well, maybe a little, friendly offense))

Must be, I've been to the one in Phoenix and the "Space Fry's" near Houston TX. Never had a problem.

One of the things I really like about Fry's is that they will allow you to wander around for hours, without having some nosy sales person breathing down your neck. "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?", "Can I help you?". But when you do need them, they are fairly easy to find and can actually help.

I've only ever been to the Fry's stores in Palo Alto and Sunnyvale. I don't even try to get service there, except maybe to ask where to find something. They also don't seem to be very consistent in keeping the shelves full (lots of inventory out of stock). Nonetheless, they're irreplaceable. Great selection and pretty good prices when you a) need it now, b) don't want to pay shipping or c) need to see it in person.

Fry's stores in other states have real customer service? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

With regard to poor management, Fry's has had some trouble of its own lately!

I've been to Fry's in Manhattan Beach and somewhere near Mountain View. Great experience, made me wish I had one on this coast.
