If they've not even been formally accused of a crime and/or convicted why parden them? The act of pardening these people lends an air of guilt and raises suspicion that may not have been warranted. It begs the question "why did they need to be pardoned?" Which adds to the public perception of guilt which further erodes trust that national political figures are required to live by the same laws as the electorate. Good job Joe.

One would conceivably receive a preemptive pardon for the exact same reason why one would hire a lawyer before speaking to the police about anything. If this needs any explaining, there is no understanding.

With the greatest of respect, this is not the same thing at all. This is like calling the police to tell them that you need a lawyer before they have even said that they want to interview you. I agree with Bykfixer. People who have spent years telling us that they are right, you're wrong, they're big, you're small, could not possibly need a pre emptive pardon except...........sorry I hear loud banging on the door.

We can - and do, obviously - disagree about to what extent a man is either a man of his word or just one who prefers to blow smoke up the asses of his “followers.” The just sworn in president is a master of both. Some choose to err on the side of caution…

In high school, it was a tradition of mine to skip the first 30 days of school and see if anyone noticed. No one said anything. They were probably secretly (or not so secretly) celebrating LOL

Using terms like “deep state” isn’t helpful. When I first heard that he is pardoning members of his own family, it struck me as disgusting. Then I did a little research. These are pre-emptive pardons and they apply to people that Trump has already threatened to take revenge on. He is a vindictive man, he has previously stated that he could have sent Hillary Clinton to jail, and that he didn’t only because he is a nice man. Both claims are false. He will try to take revenge on his critics, General Milley referred to Trump as a fascist, Fauci stood up to Trump, others attacked Trump too.

Whatever you think of Trump, this is a man who lies habitually, and he was found guilty of sexual assault, and fraud. Remember he encouraged the storming of the capitol, and for a long time falsely claimed that the Trump Biden election was stolen.

I suspect many people are very frightened of what Trump might do to honest people out of sheer narcissistic revenge.

It’s undoubtedly true that the presidents and other politicians are really just fronts for various powerful interest groups. After all, they need funding for their election campaigns, and if you don’t please powerful benefactors, they don’t get to go to the ball. Obama raised funds outside the usual system, so he might have been much more of an outsider. Trump in part used his own wealth, but he seems to be cosying up to billionaires, so expect policies that favour Bezos, Musk and other wealthy business leaders. I am an opponant of Trump, but he seems to be more of an outsider than most, so who knows, he might shake up the apple cart.
