On Paramount +, I'm trying really hard to like Star Trek "Picard" and just as hard to like Star Trek "Strange New Worlds"

"Picard" brings back most of the original characters from STTNG, but they for the most part are old and crinkly. Picard himself has a fading grumbly voice, that even when he gives a command, it does not sound very commanding.

"Strange New Worlds" is set in the time before when Kirk took over command of "The Enterprise". Similar to the original series, each episode stands independent of each other. The best cast character is Spock who is still having issues with emotion.

I don't know... I'm just having a hard time with it.

Maybe this is better said under "cringle-worthy" series but I'm not impressed with most of recent Star Trek spinoffs such as Discovery, Picard etc. I stopped at about Enterprise. Some of it is getting just plain silly.

Star Trek the original series was woke before woke was a word.
Its crew was purposefully composed of different nationalities, a Russian, a Japanese descendant, a Kenyan female, a Californian, a "Country Doctor", and a Vulcan. In it's pilot episode, its first officer was a female "Number One". Actually Roddenberry's wife, who was switched in as Nurse Chapel, and later became the computer voice in STTNG.

In the episode "Plato's Stepchildren" they celebrated what was thought to be the first interracial kiss on TV; and the episode "Let that be your last battlefield" where race riots destroyed the humanoid race on a planet where there were only two survivors, literally at each other's throats. They were each half black, and half white. But the racial disparity was that one was black on the left side, and the other was black on the right side.

It played out the absurdity of racial discrimination.

Gene Rodennberry wrote a lot of good stories. My favorite was the one where a giant hamburger pizza creature was plaguing a mining operation and Spock did a mind meld with it. Then McCoy mended it's wound from a phaser burn with some kind of silica concrete paste or something. "Damit Jim I'm a doctor not a brick mason".

My son is a TNG fan and thinks Kirk was a Trogledite. But he did give me this shirt for Fathers Day one year. I said "thanks son but you know I don't wear red shirts". He said "yup I knew that when I bought it, so I'll never have to see it".

We're both fans of 7 of 10. And we really like Q episodes of TNG. "Mr Warf, eat any good books lately?" And the ever popular "I protest I am not a Merry Man!!" lol

OMG! If I wasn't a trekkie, I'd have no idea what all of those references were to.
Kirk sure did hang with a beautiful Trogledite trainer though. Whoops... I got the wrong episode.

Being a Trekkie means one of two things. You're either one of the cool katz or you're a weirdo, depending on who is stating their opinion. It's kinda like Saturday Night Live, you're either a big fan or have no interest. Not much in between.

Talking about Star Trek Quotes, the one I love the most is from "Shore Leave"
Kirk: "The more complex the mind becomes, the greater the need for the simplicity of play."

I like to think that I have a complex mind, and therefore have a greater need to play. :)

I enjoyed season 1 of Yellowjackets, a wildly talented high school girl soccer team becomes the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Canadian wilderness.

It wasn't what I was expecting but plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

Season 2 has already started being aired.

Here's two more to add to the mix if you like good British TV

Happy Valley - Police drama set in a fictional english city featuring Sarah Lancashire, one of our best actresses. The hunt for a violent psychopath.

Blue Lights - Police drama set in Northern Ireland. Only seen one series so far but very well written.

Also just started episode 1 of "A Town Called Malice". Set in 1980's London and Spain. So far brilliant, and especially so if you like 1980's music which is central to the enjoyment.

Happy Valley is very well done; last part of the theme song:

"Stuck in speed-bump city
where the only thing that's pretty
is the thought of getting out"

I'll have to check out Blue Lights; waiting to see Hinterland, and Bang (both from Wales).

Tons of other good-excellent series from all over U.K., Australia, NZ, Scandanavia etc., might be worth starting a separate thread for this.

The Shield:
A very contraversial show at the time. Lots of companies like Quaker State and McDonalds refused to advertise on the FX channel during that one due to a variety (back then) line crossing antics.

It was one of those drama crime shows where the lead character is as crooked as a barrel of snakes, yet you root for the guy because he gets true bad guys off the street. It's a far cry from the cop shows of the 1970's where the line between good and evil was so bright Stevie Wonder could see it. Kind of a shame really, as in this show paints the good guys as bad guys and the bad guys as good guys in a number of situations.

My favorite season is when Glenn Close took over the Farmington division as a no nonsense, truely dedicated cop who got wronged by the politicians for doing a good job.

In the end ole Vick Mackey gets his.
