I am happier today, than I was yesterday or the day before (Friday).
On Friday, I had a different PT come to the house. NOT as sharp as the original one who came on Wednesday. She wants me to use the walker 3-5 minutes an hour, and walk heal toe. It hurts with each attempt to raise the knee so that the foot comes off of the floor. Even just one inch is painful. She encouraged me to push through. After 30 seconds or so, it did ease up a little bit, but still not fun.
NOTE: Be sure that you get instructions from your surgeon, on exactly what your limitations are. I.E. find out if there are any specific movements you should not do.
With a posterior approach, one is not allowed to cross his legs, nor bend all the way over. More precisely: one may not internally rotate the hip, nor flex the thigh beyond 80 degrees, definitely not beyond 90 degrees! The artificial hip might dislocate and pop out the back/side of the butt.
With the anterior approach: One may not externally rotate the hip, and hyper extend it, or the hip may dislocate and pop out the front!
She gave me a couple of exercises to do which I was already doing, and one that was exactly what I was NOT supposed to do!
Yesterday, my thigh and calf were still pretty swollen, so much so it impeded my walking and bending the knee with out discomfort. My sister said to me... keep doing those silly little exercises, and then suddenly one day you'll be able to do them.
I've been disappointed at the rate of my progress, but today it seems, there is a little bit of a break-through. Each time I get up from sitting, I do about 10 shallow squats (just a few inches), half a dozen calf raises, and then walk heel toe while raising my knee, attempting to have a natural stride. I am definitely making progress.
The PT is scheduled MWF next week. I'll see how it goes. I am tempted to ask for a different one.
