Here in the uk if you get a hip replacement on the national health you get a plastic one cemented in to an oversized hole and it is this bond that normally fails with time.

Go private you get a Ti one that fits like a glove that will out live you.

I find that nothing less than shocking, and based on what (little) I know, consider it essentially malpractice. Incredible.

Oh I agree but, when somebody else is paying for it you get what you get.
1) Free
2) Best available
Pick one 'cause ya can't have both.

My now retired boss had a hip replacement go bad. The rod was sinking into the femur so his leg slowly got shorter with each step. At one point his gait was so crooked it broke his bionic knee. They fixed that with a replacement part but to have the hip redone was another story. He had it done but oh my did it take a while to heal.

He has had both hips and both knees replaced, all from a neck injury 20 years prior causing nerves in the spinal column sending weird signals that made it seem like hip pain was actually knee pain. He also has a bionic part in his neck from that injury he sustained when a guy backed into him while standing in a parking lot at a stock car race. He used to own race cars and one day his driver backed into him with the race car hauler. Strangly enough not long after that another fellow was driving his race car.

We all hope Poppy will be fine n dandy.

Don't kid yourself though. Anytime they anesthetize someone to the point of being able to cut bones and remove them .... well sir, there's a possibility of complications.

:( My mother in law had a surgery this morning. I received a text at 1 pm stating she was doing well and should be able to return home tomorrow.

At 5 pm we received a phone call that Carol had passed away .........

I'm so sorry to hear of that terrible and disturbing news CG, and send my condolences to you and yours and all those involved who must find a way to deal / cope with this loss and somehow manage through it, which I know can be a very difficult process. It is a sobering reminder to us all of just how tenuous our grasp on life is, which is something we all tend to lose sight of until life cruelly reminds us.

Oh Chance, I'm sorry.
When my mom passed, I was angry for a year. That anger finally passed. I hope that you and yours recover quicker than I did.

The nicest thing a friend said to me is that I will at times "Feel her presence"... "She's always there looking after you."

I found it to be true.
Good luck my friend.

Thanks Chance,
Overall, I am doing very well, I had three BMs yesterday, and I am told that is very important! :)

My thigh is very stiff because of much more swelling than I anticipated, and I am very challenged to raise my foot 2 inches off of the ground by bending my knee and flexing my thigh. However I can leave my thigh straight, and flex the knee to a 90 degree behind me. This will allow me to step into the tub today to take a shower.

I am getting around with a single crutch, and don't feel pain in the hip per se. I am only taking tylenol, and celebrex; I stayed away from the oxy, and muscle relaxer. WE'll see how I do tomorrow, I may try the muscle relaxer and see if that frees up the quads a bit for me.

Another PT visit tomorrow, and then three next week.

Glad you are doing ok poppy, or should we say poopy for now.

I was recently prescribed non narcotic muscle relaxers for muscle cramps. (500 mg Methocarbomi) One did nothing. Two put me to sleep. They helped some but not like those ones I used to take in the 80's whenever I'd injure my back muscles. Phew, boy those were nice.

I am happier today, than I was yesterday or the day before (Friday).

On Friday, I had a different PT come to the house. NOT as sharp as the original one who came on Wednesday. She wants me to use the walker 3-5 minutes an hour, and walk heal toe. It hurts with each attempt to raise the knee so that the foot comes off of the floor. Even just one inch is painful. She encouraged me to push through. After 30 seconds or so, it did ease up a little bit, but still not fun.

NOTE: Be sure that you get instructions from your surgeon, on exactly what your limitations are. I.E. find out if there are any specific movements you should not do.

With a posterior approach, one is not allowed to cross his legs, nor bend all the way over. More precisely: one may not internally rotate the hip, nor flex the thigh beyond 80 degrees, definitely not beyond 90 degrees! The artificial hip might dislocate and pop out the back/side of the butt.

With the anterior approach: One may not externally rotate the hip, and hyper extend it, or the hip may dislocate and pop out the front!

She gave me a couple of exercises to do which I was already doing, and one that was exactly what I was NOT supposed to do!

Yesterday, my thigh and calf were still pretty swollen, so much so it impeded my walking and bending the knee with out discomfort. My sister said to me... keep doing those silly little exercises, and then suddenly one day you'll be able to do them.

I've been disappointed at the rate of my progress, but today it seems, there is a little bit of a break-through. Each time I get up from sitting, I do about 10 shallow squats (just a few inches), half a dozen calf raises, and then walk heel toe while raising my knee, attempting to have a natural stride. I am definitely making progress.

The PT is scheduled MWF next week. I'll see how it goes. I am tempted to ask for a different one.

Patience. You'll limp for a while then one day... you won't anymore. By week 4 you should be amazed at the progress.

I know from experience that nearly every time physical therapy is required I want to accost the therapist the first few visits and hug them after that. I'm not one of those no-pain-no-gain types so the initial visits are no fun. Yet PT has caused me to avoid surgery a number of times. Just don't over do things at first.

Both lenses in my eyes are replacements; a wonderful thing. One eye got some cloudiness and some kind of laser machine cleaned it right up. 20-15 (almost sometimes) vision.

A well worn digging bar with a few tree bases that were in the way (I busted the tamper end off years ago breaking up concrete:

Two total hip replacements so far, 1st in 05 @ 43 & the 2nd in 21 @ 59 after being kept from surgery for 2yrs because of CV19. My left leg was 3/4" shorter than my right at that point. X-ray tech & Dr didn't understand how I was walking with just a cane, or at all. PT was easier the first time (Duh youth) but the second went well, just slower. If you have a bad hip/knee don't put it off. Most of the issues I still have are because of the delay during Covid lock downs. They are/were MUCH worse than the recovery from the hip replacement.

I can claim a fake tooth.

If we were fantasizing about the future, would prefer a pair of new, massively powerful cybernetic legs and feet. Mine still work but definitely wearing out faster than they should.
