Bizarre & Horrifying Maine Shooting

It's actually not though and anyone can handle most any caliber if they'll put in the time and learn how to handle recoil. I personally saw a couple of 12 and 14 year old boys shooting a Freedom Arms .454 Casull with improving accuracy, and enjoying it.
I've taken dozens of deer with a .460 S&W Magnum hand cannon. Longest shot 168 yards. Now that's a handful. The same revolver shoots .454 Casull as an intermediate load.

Hunting with this handgun is hardly related to carrying a handgun for work, self defense, or competition.

Shot one off sticks when they first came out. Man it’s a good shooter

Ok I'll play;

If one decides to conceal carry or open carry for that matter, they need to make sure they can handle the weapon. Don't need some rogue round hitting the innocent because a 10 mil is cooler than a 9 mil, or what have you. What if you miss? Hours at the shooting range don't mean squat when the real thing happens and suddenly bodies are falling.

Afterall, most people deep down inside, instinctively do not want to shoot another person. That includes law enforcement folks who will if they have to, but they've received special training for that. The average joe six pack with their KelTech P15 are not actually trained for the thing like in Lewiston Maine.

Not many folks could honestly say if they were in that bowling alley with all of those little kids screaming and they had a chance to drop that @$$hole with one to the chest, could calmy and casual like take their time and Steve McQueen cool squeeze the trigger and take the guy out. Nope it'll be more like "holy crap", heart racin' andrenaline at the redline and "pow pow pow"....."uh oh I missed". That's the real world for most of us.

.357 sig is almost an exotic round, more expensive than 9 or .45 and not as widely available, less load choices, there are many such exotic rounds out there, 9x23, 9 largo, ,45glock... but they did not catch on.

You practice, so it becomes more second nature & muscle memory.

Shooting a 1cm* you don't realize it has more energy until you immediately shoot something with less. you simply get used to it.
Bought my Ruger in '18 (just looked up the current price and it's a few hundred dollars more than when I bought)

*slight joke there

edit, added the current price line

As good as it is, .357 SIG just not common at all.
You need ammo to practice. When you do find it, it's usually marked up. Hand-loading practice ammo is an option. Though seems almost no one does that with .357 SIG.

The slightly higher pressure (and grain) 9mm NATO round is definitely a good option for your average 9mm owner.
.. $14.29 a box is very cheap compared to other calibers.

You can get 9mm +p+ and have more power. however not all guns rated for that, you'll probably destroy some cheap high point gun with those, and hurt yourself.

Ironically, the Freedom Arms .454 Casull has a harder recoil than a long barreled S&W .460 does, even though it’s spitting out so much more horsepower.

Fact remains, anyone that wants to master a 10mm, can.

I have shot 10mm in a colt delta elite, a Glock and one of the new springfields and I haven’t had any problems with recoil and don’t know why anyone really would have a problem with it. Especially in a 1911 style weapon. It wasn’t even horrible in the lighter weight pistols. I could imagine someone that has never shot before would be a little recoil shy but it’s not noticeably worse than anything else.

I have a Hi-Point 10mm carbine, have a 4x red dot on it.
Shoot it with Fiocchi ammo which is very much in the +P category but doesn't say it on the packaging.
...has never jammed or misfired, not once.

Funny story:
Was shooting my Hi-Point at 8" AR steel , about 25~30 yards >> with everyone sitting behind me.
A cousin of a buddy of mine all the sudden said 'hey, I just got a piece of lead that landed on my head'
.. thought to myself, what do you want me to do about it.

A 10mm round in a rifle barrel is, at 180gr, very strong
especially with the the Fiocchi ammo.

I haven't been following the news updates all that close, but I just saw this headline:

"Maine officials suggest shooter’s motive likely related to mental health struggle"

WOW REALLY!?!?! DO YOU THINK SO?!?! GOOD JOB GUYS FOR FIGURING THAT OUT!!!

Unreal. These kind of people want to pass more laws to "protect" us when they're too damn stupid to enforce anything that already exists!

Those are the old single action design. They flip up in a shooters hand when fired, I think that's by design.

I've shot hi-point carabine in 9mm, it seem to be decent gun, but at one time, 20 or so years ago, stores were flooded with cheap 9mm pistols, less than 200 bucks new, it was a simple blowback, thin chamber walls, never mind +p+ ammo, regular 9mm is almost never used in guns with simple blowback. they did have rather heavy slide, but they were very unpleasant to shot.

anyone else been avoiding the news?.. its a scary world in which we live in. Perhaps a revamp of the mental health system is in order?. I have no answers anymore.

Yes, I've reduced my intake. Having 24/7 news from around the globe is not conducive to good mental health. If something is really important to me, I'm going to hear or read about it sooner or later.

I haven't watched TV news in weeks. I just read occasional news articles online which grab my attention. I didn't even know about the Hamas attack until I read about it on CPF. Same with this shooting.
