Hi,
What can you guys tell me about buying black lights?
Where can i get them.
Also, just some general information.
I was thinking about using a couple of these for the play.
(Black light Play)
Thanks

I assume that you are talking about non-LED blacklights.

I am certainly by no means an expert, but here is what I know....

1) Avoid the incadescent blacklights at all costs. They are cheap, but you get what you pay for. They simply do not work. These are simply old-fashioned $0.50 light bulbs with a special blue coating on them.

2) Flourescent black lights work wonderfully. If you have existing flourescent light fixtures, you may be able to save some money by buying just the black light tube. Those black lights that you can buy in the mall are just standard flourescent light fixtures with special tubes installed.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,
id suggest asking on usenet rec.arts.theatre.stagecraft but this has started huge arguments in the recent past.

Anyway first thing is what you are after is Blacklight Blue lamps, blacklight is a generic term that includes lamps for tanning and fishtanks etc.

Fluorescent tubes, available in BLB from 6 inches to 4 feet these will all fit in standard fluro holders from a hardware store.
Couple of 4 ft tubes usually enough for a small stage to give that UV effect.

Compact Fluros like the energy savinb lamps, have seen them in BLB as 11w and 25w versions.

Mercury lamps, self ballasted,ie just screw in called MBTF,in 160w flavour usually, opr mercury lamps that need ballast from 60w to 400w,big ones will give you sunburn if you get too close.

Pro UV fittings from Wildfire and Nocturne very expensive but very good.

Avoid the blue coated incnadescnt lamps from novelty stores, inefficient and short lived.

Or gel theatre fixtures with Congo Blue, cant remeber gekl number offhand, wiorks on some fluro pigments.

UV pigments from variety of sources freom novelty store to pro theatre supply, even somenwashing powders with optical brightners will fluorsec.

Meant to say on lamps ,shop about!

On the net and with disco and theatre suppliers, even a lighting shop would be able to order BLB lamps for you, there a standard part of lamp manufacturer`s catlogue.

But prices can vary wildly and a bit of shopping around is bound to save a good few bucks.

Dan,

What's a black light play ?

Sylvestor.

p.s. Did you receive your Arc-LE ? How is it ?

Hey,
Accually, our church youth group had an idea about making a skit using black light. Based on something we saw somewhere else. Accually, for school, we did one when i was in gr 4. If the place is dark enoguth, it works.

Accually, it hasn't. I sent payment on monday. So, i'm not sure if they got is yet. I was gonna email them, but i figure they're off for christmas. No email from them either.

Dan,

I don't live by the store. I'm about a 20 minute drive away. I had ordered an Arc-LS from them, but because of the short supply of the 1st batch, it does not look like I'll be getting one from the first run. I should hopefully get the LS on the next run. Trans Canada said I could get the LE if I wanted to change my mind, but from the pictures that ARC posted of the first run, I think I'm going to wait for the LS. You should e-mail Trans Canada if you have any questions. They are very good at giving prompt replies.

When you do get the LE, let me know how you like it. I might still get one.

thanks

I would really recommend the widlfires from widlfirefx.com They can't be beat for brightness. You could probably rent them from a local theatre rental shop, or at least they would know where to rent them.

Sylvestor,
I'll tell you when i get it, it'll probably be around new years, with christmas and all.

Brock,
as for the lights, i was thinking something cheap. from what i'm reading, i can get blacklight flourescent bulbs/tubes, where can i get a holder . Do most hardware stores hold them.

I have 4 true 4 foot UV flourescent lamps and they aren't really cheap, they run about $30 per tube. I suppose that is a LOT cheaper then a wildfire unit though. You can run the 4 foot tubes in any "shop light" fixture, you should be able to find those at any home or hardware shop. Although some of the really cheap fixtures (under $10) tend to burn out tubes faster, 2000 hrs vs 5000 to 10,000hrs.

Yup you just need standard fluorescent lamp fittings from your local hardware store/electrical wholesaler.Don`t use the plastic clip on diffusers with them it will block some of the UV output.

Wilfire light sources might blow the budget a bit but they do make a range of UV active paints and makeup products.Rosco, link in previous post, make excellent UV active paints, small sample kit available. Novelty/ Joke stores usually stock some UV active products as well.

Decent UV active items make the effect much more worthwhile.

It`s also a caution on what soap powder to use whaen washing costumes, especially if they are black with UV designs, avoid the ones with brightners as they will make the blax glow.

Top tip is also to use a good anti dandruff shampoo!

I use black lights at parties and stuff - you can get 4ft blacklight (UV) tubes in the UK from B&Q for £8.99 and they also sell 2ft ones for £5.99.

I also have a UV canon (flood light), which uses a 400watt mercury discharge lamp - but the lamp has gone (fell over in the back of the car) - a new one is £60 from everywhere I can find them - anyone any idea where i can get one cheaper?

GES (Giant Edison Screw in case anyone wondered) 400w BLB Mercury Lamp:

Hi LED-FX, Beat me to it about black light bulbs, it seems to me that Service Trading have had the same advert for about a zillion years!! I visited their shop when i lived in the south several times in the 70's!
All the best,
Davidc

Hi David,
Think your right about Service Tradings ad,dont think its changed since Marconi was a lad :).

They can be handy for some odd things, got some 8" strobe reflectors from them a while back, something that was unobtainium anywhere else.

Their old school and quite helpful and will be sorely missed if they ever dissapear.

Adam

Thanks for the info, i'll give them a ring next week

Where are Service Trading based?
