I was playing with a red keychain LED last night to see how well it penetrated my finger.
One thing lead to another and I ended up in the bathroom with the lights out, holding the light in my mouth pointed up towards my nose. I've a full beard so it would probably work better cleans shaven.
The result is a thin red light shining through under the nose. Then you blow out your cheeks and they appear out of the dark.
