i seem to remember several posts about extremely bright rechargable mods from a long time ago...does anyone have any easy instructions on making an extremely bright mod?

i've never done any incandescant modding, and don't know much about bulbs numbers, or even rechargable batts or resistance... all my luxeon mods are dd.

any help would be greatly appreciated, the simpler the better. and of course, the brighter the better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think lemlux has explored this as much as anyone. I took his advice and ran 3 x 123's in a Mag 2C using one of their hotrod 6-cell xenons and it was extremely bright, although at tightest focus (to get this max brightness) you kinda had to move the light around to make out what it was you were shining at.

Using a 5-cell Krypton bulb yields good results too, providing the same tight spotbeam.

There were some mods discussed which were based on MR16 lamp assemblies in a maglite style case run with a bunch of AA nimh cells. If you do a search for MR16 you might come up with something. The original thread was '1500lumen dominator killer' or something like that..

hmmm. that sounds nice, do you have any idea on about how much light it is putting out?

i seem to remember some of the old rechargable mods from a long time ago putting out over 800lumens. but then again, i *am* crazy... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

thanks graham, you posted while i was composing my above response.

i'll do a search and see what i can find out.

great...just what i need, to wade through a bunch of threads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i was hoping for some quick easy answers, preferably with pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowlaugh.gif

i guess i will now go and attempt to read through all of those...if in the meantime, anyone would like to post a simple tutorial complete with pictures and all required infromation, please let me know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

also, i'm wondering if any new technology has been developed in the meantime...those threads are *old* /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Everyone seems to be waiting for the elusive 3-TO-D battery converters to emerge from Elektro Lumens. With those you'd be able to run 3 AA NiMH cells in series in a D package, making it very easy to boost the voltage on D cell flashlights... I know I want some /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yeap. Im waiting that 3-TO-D for mod mag5D with that OSRAM 20 Watt 12 degree lamp.

i think this mod could deliver about 480 lumens

*cant wait*

Rothrandir,

I believe that the SL35X lamp assembly could be fitted into a D-Mag head using a PR-base adapter like the one I used in my TigerLight LA-to-Mag 4D mod here:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB14&Number=189190&Forum=UBB14&Words=TigerLight%20LA&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=3months&Main=189190&Search=true#Post189190

SL35X needs 6-volts, so 5 x 1/2D Powerstream cells will fit a 3D Mag. Seems I read that the SL35X actually out-performs the TigerLight. Those Powerstream 1/2D NiCads have very little voltage drop under load, so they work with high-powered incandescent lamps quite nicely.

Have fun!

John

Another possibility I've thought about is the TL LA in a 3C Mag using 6 x 1/2C NiMH cells. I don't have the cells to try this with, or I would have by now.

This might even work with the 20-watt SL35X LA using all six cells and slightly overdriving the lamp. I would expect that these 1/2C NiMH's would drop some voltage due to higher internal resistance, so using six cells might work.

SL35X LA in a 3C Mag-Lite...smaller *and* brighter than my 4D Tiger/Mag mod.

John

You could probably do 6 NiMH AA cells in a Mag 2D with either the TL LA or 5 AA's with the Streamlight Bulb if you wanted something shorter.

what could you do with a 2D mag? I have an idea about boring out a 3D mag & fitting 12 AA's & a MR16 12V bulb.
I quite like the length of the 2D mag - does anyone have any quick mods maybe involving a sleeve & 123's? what sort of LA would I need to make a very bright mod?

The simplest mod (very simple in fact) is to put a sleeve into the light and run 3xCR123 batteries, giving 9v. I've got a 2C mag with this setup. A Carley 808 and a UCL lens and it's a pretty amazing light--especially when you consider the price!

hmmm...

all of those options sound really nice, and i may end up using them. but i was really looking for some m6 level light or better. i want a light that will set a desk on fire at 30yards /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rothrandir,

Well, I'm not certain - but I think 123's will fit side-by-side in a D-Mag. I think it was Lemlux who first put four end-to-end in a 2C - you might be able put 8 or 10 lithium cells in a 2D.

Would this be heading in the right direction?

John

lol, i don't know.

i just want >800lumens. rechargable would be nice also, but only if i didn't have to take the bats out.

Around 12 123s will give 12x3 = 36 volts, getting 1 amp outta them ought to give 1 hour run time, 1 amp plus 36 volts = 36 watts, use that to drive a 30 watt HID. You'll get around 2000 lumens of photons. Of cos the 1 hour run time and the 12 123s will give you $6 USD per hour of run. For 2000 lumens of estacy, I don't see why not? I mean if Roth can spend $48 a day playing paint balls, why can't he spend $48, which is 8 hours of photonic goodness, throughout the nite? ;p

nerd... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twak.gif

the money wasn't all mine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

unless nerd buys me batteries, i would really prefer rechargables...if, they can be charged with a plug.

Hell, why don't you just lug around a car battery and a freaking headlight. You can give it a handle and everything. You can jump it right to your cars 12V and charge it while you drive!
