Yes, the Eternalight is old technology, 5mm LED, heck, they're not even Nichia DS, why would any flashaholic still use such a dinosaur? Well, there are still things it does better than any other light in my collection, long runtime, dimmable (then again, my NT120-P is also dimmable), and more to the point, it has that incredibly useful variable strobe setting
yes, I did use the term useful and strobe in the same sentence...
See, I just got a new job a few months back after a long period of unemployment/underemployment, and one of the many things I'm working on there (it's a PC repair shop that deals mainly with IBM computerized cash registers and Self-Check-Out machines (SCO's) Currently, I'm refurbing the cash dispenser portions of the SCO units, these are computerized cash delivery systems with *LOTS* of belts, gears, and moving parts in the actual cash transport system, lots of mechanical things moving rapidly and rotating
With the proper strobe rate, I can check the shaft bearings for proper rotation, check the belt prop shafts for any wobble or instability, and make sure the belts and gears are rotating correctly, not slipping or grinding.
with the ErgoMarine's assistance, Ive already identified multitudes of slow/bad bearings, and a couple of out of balance/slightly bent (not visible to the naked eye, only visible under rotation) belt propshafts In fact, one of my co-workers has taken to asking if he can borrow the light when he's checking the cash dispenser units he's working on, and one of the guys in the next shop area across from me has been asking to borrow the EM as well....
Combine this with the fact that I also carry my Fenix L1T 2.0 (my loaner) and my NovaTac 120-P on me all the time, and a couple SAKs and my Leatherman, theyve taken to calling me quot;MacGuyverquot; I think at least one of them is thinking about picking up an Eternalight of his own (assuming Tech. Associates is still in business and making the Eternalight....)
