Light will come out the front with or without reflector and lens. As said before, "you can". You can have the reflector with the lens.
Having a reflector with the lens will not affect the properties of the lens and the lens will not affect the properties of the reflector. The only thing affected will be the properties of the beam.

It will still throw just as far with both the reflector and lens.

Ok, I guess i need to decide between one or the other.

As for battery power, what voltage should run to these emitters and will i need 3D cells or 9AA cells?

Oh dear ! what did I do with that post ?

https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/259112

Its to do with the emitter and the way it emits light , the XR-E throws out a tighter beam , so when focused through a lens [ Aspheric ] it becomes tighter or concentrated into a smaller space , so there fore more intense . the XP-G , throws a wider beam , there fore can not be focused as well into a small intense area ..

Throw and output are not really mutual , a light with low output can throw further if the light is focused into a tight beam .
How well , the XP-G can be focused , and how well it will do ? Some one who has been there and done that .

Solarforce L2 XP-G R5 with lens = 12500Lux / output over 300Lumen
Solarforce L2 XR-E R2 with lens = 22000+ Lux / output 220Lumen

This I can give you :

very nice thread! Lots information! I learned something!

So am at the point where... it really isnt gonna matter to me what type of LED i go with, i just want to be pointed in the direction of one or the other by someone who has a nice thrower maglite with aspherical lens...

I am confusing myself and would just like an uncloudy option lol.

So if someone would be so kind as to suggest a complete setup for me and a "where to buy parts" that would be fabulous!

- emitter
- battery supply and carriers if needed
- heatsink
- aspherical lens (Already have it)
- 3D Maglite (Already have it)

Thanks!!!!! lovecpf

Again : for pure thrower :

XR-E R2 Emitter ..
Driver = What batteries ?
I dont know why but DX seems to be having problems sourcing 8.4v drivers .

So lets say you want to use those 3 x D cells = Try this one

Now the emitter will need to be on a 14mm star or smaller .
The driver linked to is buck boost 1A , and offers different options for modes .

If you chose 3 x AA carriers , you will need a at least [ 13.5v ] a driver that can handle the voltage .

Now to find a R2 on a 14mm base ???? Here is a Q5 just in case .

Finding the parts for your build , thats 90% of the fun . Here is a link to a heatsink ...

SWEEET!! Exactly what i was hoping from someone as kind as yourself! :twothumbs

Only thing left for me to find is some AA carriers to get some ultimate power out of this emitter.
BTW, which would have more battery life? 3 D cells or 9 AA cells?
Would there be a noticeable different in lumens?

Might need to go with that Q5, dont seem to find the other on a 14mm base. lol

Excellent! I searched KD over and over for those carriers but couldnt find them! Glad you did!!

So the following have been ordered:

- (1) Aspherical Lens
- (1) UCL Lens
- (2) Heatsinks
- (3) Q5 Emitters on 14mm base
- (3) Drivers
- (6) 1D to 3AA Carriers

And I have the Maglites!
And I will be using non-rechargeable batteries untill i order some.

(the extra driver/emitter is just incase one doesnt work or blows, or i make a mistake soldering. lol)

Thanks again for the excellent assistance! I will take some pictures of my build and parts when they arrive!

If i'm missing something let me know please!

somewhat ontopic somewhat off... But do those 3aa-D carries use a parallel? or series circuit? if not are there any that will give me 3aa in a parallel ? Thanks!

From the page linked above.
This battery adapter creates the equivalent of a nominal 4.5 volt D cell battery. The three AA batteries are connected in series with each other and not in parallel.

I must say, shipping takes a very long time.

I have not received any parts for my maglite mod yet...

We just got hammered with 2 Nor-Easter's and so we have had many days without Postal Service...

Still looking forward to modifying my Maglites!!!
