Looking to convert any light to a flipdown type diffuser.

I see some food storage containers use a frosting technic, so you can see the contents but don't see the details of them. This may make a good diffusing material. Next step would be how to construct a proper hinge.

Has anyone cracked this problem with a ingenius solution yet?

Depending on the diameter of your flashlight(s) you can use a flip up scope cover. Some already come with different colored windows. You could remove the existing window and install your own frosted one. One model of Surefire's beam shapers looks exactly like a flip up scope cover. I removed the diffuser material and installed a diffused UCL glass from flashlightlens.com It worked better than the stock Surefire diffuser not robbing so many lumens. Used the beam shaper for the C series SF lights.
