Today, I am carrying one less EDC light...

... This morning, I had my rucksack packed with everything required for work today. To finish off, I put my lunchbox into the same pocket I do everyday, the same pocket as my Mag 2D ROP resides. I then zipped everything up and went to have breakfast.

I was flicking through the Argos Sale catalogue when I noticed a Dyson on sale. I went upstairs just to check that the Dyson I had just bought was not the same one. When I came downstairs, I could see bright light eminating from the bottom of my bag. I thought it must be the P1D I keep in the front pocket

It was then that I noticed the smoke :poof:. I quickly unzipped the bag and pulled the ROP out. Darn thing had been accidentally activated by my lunchbox, and melted a hole through the bottom of the bag. I wiped the molten plastic from the bezel, and placed it on my bedside table. Needless to say, I am not carrying the ROP today.

Cannot wait to get the E1e back up and running. That will be my incandescent EDC then.:twothumbs

Be safe,

Mike

least you lunch was warm eh? :nana:

oh i have a good one...

the other night i was out, and we wanted to take some pictures, but we didnt want the washed out white of camera flash, enter ROP.

i ver cleverly used my White Beanie over it as a diffusser. I was about to take the picture when i noticed it was SMOKING!

i proceded to take pictures by bouncing light of the floor after that....:poof:

If you pack a Mag like that in the future, I recommend that you lock out the tailcap (about a quarter turn).

I bought two Nuwai ALX-352L Luxeon V flashlights. I thought they were small. They were huge. The button would also get pressed when placed inside the supplied sheath.

So I gave both to friends and gave them the 'accidental on' warning. Well, two weeks later, one of my friends mentioned how the flashlight accidentally turned on and melted his gove compartment.

You could add an AW soft start switch, the switch itself is recessed to prevent accidental turn on...and the 3 modes make your light a LOT more usefel.

Bloody hell Mike, Think I'll stick to LED's.

Have they got any good rucksacs on offer ?

The damage to the rucksack is not that substantial. It only melted in the focus sweet-spot. No damage to the carpet below it either.

My laptop, Ph.D log book, various compiler documents and my Leatherman Juice Xe6 were in there. Would have been in a right mess if that lot went up in smoke.

I don't think that AW makes a switch for PR bulbs, only bi-pin. So I don't think it's an option for ROP? I've had the fear of torching something too by accidentally activating my ROP in a bag. So I usually carry the LiIon cells separately and put them in when I want to fire it up. I don't EDC my 2C M@g ROP, only travel via car usually. Camping, road trips, work trips, etc.

At least it wasnt one of the Lummi's in your pocket .... O U C H !

Glad it wasnt that bad :D

Anyone ever put a keyed switch on their fire starter ?

I've noticed that I can do that, but if the anodizing wears off on the threads, I will be stuck with the same problem.

Will have to be careful not to carry it in bags. Pockets and hands are Ok.

I never put a real hotwire in any bag or box without deactivating it. One can cut a plastic silver dollar sized disc from an old vitamin bottle or pill vial, and put it between the spring and battery bottom. Then screw the tailcap on a turn or so.

maybe, u can make a hard plastic sleve for the maglite from PVC piping? and ducttape it down to the flashlight? ( ghetto, but i think it works )

Put a thin layer of plumbers Teflon tape on the threads and it'll be enough to prevent the circuit from being completed in lock out. I did that for my modded mag i wouldn't want a 100watt bulb going off when I didn't want it to.

I carry my 2D ROP in my bag every day too, but I have the NIte Eyez long D sleeve/handle thingy on it. It completely covers the entire body of the 2D size, I cut a hole where the button is and this makes it more recessed so its not as easily activated. Haven't had a problem yet but now I will definitely keep that in mind.

Some excellent suggestions here guys, thank you.

I've been carrying it daily in the same fashion for months now. The only difference is that I broke my old lunch box, and used a slightly different shaped one. This must be a cause of the incident.

I think I shall makes a plastic cup that fits over the end of the carrier to prevent accidental activation. It needs to be a pretty substantial solution because fire is not laughing matter.
