I have several Maxpedition products and am very pleased with the quality and designs. I am looking into a day pack and a 3 day style ruck.

I am interested in any first hand info and comparisons on the Maxpedition Vulture, Condor, and Falcon vs Camelbacks BFM, Motherlode, and Talon.

Thanks,

KS

Hi Keyser -

What's your planned use? Might be a little easier to focus on features of interest to you in particular.

I think the biggest difference is just in the focus of the product. Camelbak makes very good bags, built around the hydration bladder. This means they do a fantastic job of holding the water bag, and a really solid job of everything else. I have nothing but praise for their products overall, and the Talon looks fantastic - I'm very eager to check one out - haven't laid hands on it yet. BFM and Motherlode are very good packs, but haven't knocked my socks off.

Maxpedition, by contrast, has the best-built packs I've ever seen. They're insanely overbuilt - there might be something that can damage 'em, but I haven't yet found it. The ones that have hydration holders do a solid job of holding whatever bladder you put in, but not nearly as good a job, IMHO, as the Camelbak, where the pack is literally built around a particular bladder.

For me, I carry a hydration bladder every once in a long while, and the unique design of Maxpedition's packs, with the focus on compressing the load and holding it close to the body in a very versatile pack, is a much bigger deal. Also the fact that it seems like Maxpedition's designers own the same things I do, and the spaces in the bags end up being a near-perfect match for my stuff - might be a negative if you own different shaped stuff.

If I was looking to carry a hydration bladder full time, I might be more inclined to focus on the Camelbak stuff. Same if it seemed like their bags were a better match for my stuff. I'd never feel bad about recommending it to anyone.

The one negative I always try to remind people about the Falcon is that it's a 3-layer pack, with each layer relatively flat, even when the bag is fully expanded. Great for holding a laptop, a flat-folded coat, books, etc. Lousy for holding a football, melon or anything non-flat. It's also a relatively small pack at only 1500 cubic inches. If you need to carry non-flat or bigger things, one of the others is a better choice. I carry mine specifically because it's a small pack - I don't like 'em big and floppy.

The Vulture is darn near twice as large, at 2800 cubes. If I remember correctly, the BFM and Motherlode are in the 2400 range, and the Talon around 2100. Condor is a bit smaller at 1900. How much stuff do you need to carry for the day/3-day uses?

The Vulture is a big pack, set up in a bit of a 'pancake' so it doesn't extend too far behind you, even when full - very different shape than the Falcon, BFM or Motherlode, which all are much more 'cubical', and extend far behind when full.

Nearly everything else is based on your personal preferences and uses. Happy to answer questions if I can - I've used the BFM and Motherlode for a couple days each, but don't own them. I do have the Vulture and Falcon.

I've got a Camelbak BFM, and have deployed with it to both Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a great pack and well built. Depending on what you pack, it should work well as a three day pack. I've gotten a lightweight sleeping bag in it, as well as clothes, food, a hygiene kit, as well as other necessary gear. It opens up wide, so packing is easy and doesn't force you to rummage through everything to get at what would be on the bottom of the pack. The new wide mouth water bladder is easier to fill that the older models and the pack straps are comfortable. There are many attachment points for additional pouches or MOLLE gear type equipment. I agree with Deanster that the pack does extend quite a bit behind you, but it shouldn't be an issue unless you are in a cramped space walking around. I'll have to check out the Vulture and Falcon. I have a couple of the Maxpedition pouches and love the construction. I hope this helps.

You might want to check out the Baby Condor. It has 2010 cu.i. and its bigger than the regular condor, the Falcon, Pygmy Falcon and is a steal at the price - 79 bucks. The main compartment in that thing looks like you could crawl in and zip it up around you!! I will be getting one shortly, and I'll post some "real world" pics...

I don't know if I should start another Maxpedition thread or not, so I'll post in this one instead. I have a few questions about the Maxpedition products.

1. I notice that they don't have a storm cover (fabric that covers the zipper) over the zippers, so if I either forgot to close a zipper fully, or a zipper comes open (I've found this to happen with really packed bags) will the bag flood? I have a MEC (Canadian retailer) bag right now and the storm collar has saved my life a couple of times already.

2. Is the Proteus able to clip onto the bottom of the Falcon or another of the bigger packs? So that it would be like a buttpack but not clipped onto me.

Thanks, -Duncan.

1. I have heard rumors that the zippers will leak water with severe down pours....i've neva had them open up by themselves...even if really packed....the compression straps keep pressure of the zippers. I bought a rain cover from REI to cover it...the case clips on the side with malice clips

2. the proteus will clip onto the proteus....its better to use long malice clips.

1. Lightbringer, could you tell us which rain cover you picked from REI? I would like to get one to fit over my Falcon, but I have already attached hip pouches to the side MALICE attachment points.

2. Did you mean attach the Proteus to another pack? Hmm.. could always add more gear to my Falcon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Where else would I store my spare flashlights? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

1. i got the duck back 40 from REI for the falcon, i think its the smallest one.

2. i meant attach the proteus to the falcon...i have heard its been done....i havent done it yet because i im waiting on some long malice clips.

and yes, the duck back 40 will fit over the falcon with the proteus attached and fully loaded, i just tried it stacked.

Lightbringer, thanks for ID'ing the duck back from REI.

BTW. I took another look at the Proteus. Looks like you would have to take a pair of the long MALICE clips and attach it to the bottom pouch face of the Falcon. Any possibility of hanging the Proteus directly underneath? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

mmm, i guess you could anchor it to the bottom directly instead of the face. there are two loops where the compression straps feed through...you could clip it to those loops. not sure if they would be as strong as molle attachment point, but knowin how tuff max stuff is, it probably is. ur proteus 'face' would be aimed straight down.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up purchasing a Falcon for my day pack and it seems like it will work out just right. I am always impressed with the construction of Maxpedition products and the Falcon is no exception. That still leaves me with a decision for a well built pack for 2-3 day use that I can pack with a sleeping bag and lightweight tent.

I just got my baby condor in, and I have to say I'm impressed. You can see the pics and review in my other thread.
