Can a SSC be removed from a star safely?

I've got two SSC star's from DX that I need to get the emitters off of for a Mag build.

I got the lead's unsoldered but I can't get the emitter off of the star.

Does anyone know how to get the emitter off of the star without damaging it?

Thanks for any info.

Michael.

you need to heat up the entire base so that the solder holding the emitter can be released. There are a few techniques to do this, one being putting the star on a hot plate, hot air soldering, etc.

the easiest way would be to very carefully put hold the star on on stove top and constantly put a little pressure pulling the emitter off. once the board is hot enough the solder will melt and you need to pull the emitter off immediately so that it doest do damage.

Yay, I managed to get both of them off the stars by holding them over the stove.:)

But I also managed fry one by not getting the slug insolated right.:(.

Anyway thanks for the info.

I thought I remembered the SSC slugs were soldered to the star? Or am I imagining that? I thought I had to heat them up enough to flow the solder where as Lumiled's LEDs are just epoxied?
