im new to all this

i ordered a bare P7, do i just epoxy it to my heat sink or do i NEED a pad under it?
:ohgeez:

No need for a pad unless you need to raise the P7 for fit or focusing.
If your heatsink in anodized just use a very thin layer of AA (artic Alumina) for the epoxy. If your heatsink is bare metal you will need to make sure the slug doesn't touch the heatsink since the slug on the P7 is positive.

The simplest is Arctic Alumina adhesive (2 part epoxy), which is an electrical insulator.

The better approach thermally is Arctic Alumina thermal compound or Arctic Ceramique, both of which are also electrical insulators and which have higher thermal conductivity than the AA epoxy. Then use regular epoxy around the perimeter of the P7 to secure the LED (assuming there is no issue with fit/clearance since you will be adding some volume with this ring of epoxy).
