Once a board has been potted and a head completed can the board current (BB400 vs BB600) be divined using a common DMM?

Yes, if you DMM in the high amp setting (10A) mode is low impedance.

You can measure the battery current and from there deduce which module you have.

With a good fresh set of alkalines, input current for a BB400 is somewhere like 500-550 with 3V input. For the BB600, input current is more like 700-800mA.
