So I recently bought the airspeed press book on canister lights. It has inspired me to try and build my own light. The first thing I decided to start with is the canister. I was thinking of trying to build one out of some form of plastic. I then had a friend show me his paintball set up and he had an aluminum cylinder that he uses. He had an extra one that was out of hydro and he gave it to me. Has anyone cut the top off and tried to make a canister out of one of these?

I'm thinking of using the light head and HID sold through Oxycheq. Anyone have experince using these parts?

I want to build one so that I learn something. I realize I wont end up saving any money over buying a used one but it will be fun. Any other info I should think of or know before hand??

Thanks,

Question is what benefit will an ali can have?

It will be stronger, but I have never seen a plastic can fail strength wise.
It will be heavier.
How will you attach the lid? You cant use SS latches and screws due to galvanic corrosion. It will have to me machined and threaded.

start with the choice of bulb first, it's going to drive your power requirements and that will dictate space in the canister

I think the point is design your light around your needs not around a single part that you already have.

Apply that to diving... lets see I need a rebreather the size of a 2-D Mag that I can carry-on :)
