What flashlight would you put into a car for a backup emergency light - for all the crap that could happen, in a city or in the country?

Let's say you already have a keychain AAA light on your person at all times.

Suggestions? (Or links to an old thread?)

Current candidates are Propoly 4AA and Inova x5.

I have a Surefire G2 in the boot (ah, trunk for you Yanks) of my car.

Yes, a G2 would be very good. It is only 36USD

I would also recommend the G2. In any case, I would choose something that uses CR123 batteries, as they have a much longer shelf life than alkalines as well as better performance in cold weather.

I think 6P is good for the glove box. I would go once further and get a 3 watt G&P LED dropin to ensure you never have bulb failures at the wrong time. You could also get a A19 adapter and add extended run time.
I would not get anything with less output than that as you may need to shine the light at traffic to ward off them hitting your car if it suddenly dies of a electrical problem and you are left without lights and still partially in the lane. It will take you a little bit to get the flares (which you should also have) in place at 25/50/100 meters.

This question has been asked/answered many times. A lot of people recommend a headlamp so you can have your hands free when working on your car. I think its good to have 2 flashlights, one in the passenger compartment and one in the boot/trunk, preferably with li-ion batteries. Some people like to have a 2-level light, such as the Streamlight Twin Task 2-L, so you can have a low level for reading.

For a few years now I've been keeping my old PT Attitude in the car. Lots of runtime, good flood, and seriously waterproof. Also have a Task Force 1 AA 1 watt for a little throw and an Energizer 4AA Folding Lantern. Been meaning to put the 3AA MagLED in there, too, for spotting and emergency clubbing.

two Dorcy 1 watt single cells...one on each door
saved me alot of trouble last time I needed it

as far as clubbing goes the 6Ds on the car, empty...alkalines not only dont last too long, but they tend to swell and expand in your flashlight :green:

What about a headlamp? or some type of hands free option since you may need your hands free to change tire, check under the hood, etc. I keep one in my BOB, which is always in the trunk. Plus a lot of headlamps use AAA batteries so an extra pack of batteries with the headlamp would benefit your AAA light that you always have with you.

Right now I have the Streamlight 4AA ProPolymer Luxeon as already mentioned above plus the Eternalight Marine and a SureFire E1.

In my car:

Scorpion LED: General usage, great runtime, clicky switch, rubber sleeve around body (nice for holding light in the mouth, rather than bare aluminum).

Mag 4D LED: decent performance, LONGGGGG runtime, utility (as a defensive weapon, or breaking glass).

All vehicles should carry a light which:

1. Isn't so desirable that it will "walk" or go missing because it gets used in preference to the light you keep in the house

2. Is good enough for a reasonable emergency, such as having to change a tire at night in the rain or snow

3. Has a good runtime in case you are stranded for a long period

4. Is powerful enough to be helpful in directing or warning other traffic of a hazard

5. (Most important of all!) Has its batteries checked/replaced regularly!

well I have 3!

One 4D cell Maglite with DiamondLED 3W led upgrade (With one dummy battery)

One car multi flashlight/lamp (has neon bulb, incand bulb, and red/orange flahers). I can also draw current from the car socket.

And since One should have his passengers covered also, this Croatian-made military flashlight with a 4.5V cell. And with the build-in red and green filters it is good for traffic signaling. Also notice the Huge belt clip. It is good to put the flashlight on and wear it while you change a tire in the night...
