Howdy folks, new member here (but I've been lurking from time to time for a couple months already). Yesterday I bought the new Cat Eye LED headlight. 4 AA batteries driving 3 LEDs in a really nicely designed reflector -- I hear the reflector was the hard part to get right. I haven't done any actual riding with it yet (I put studded snowtires on my mountain bike and now I'm pretty much grounded when there isn't ice on the roads!), but I've shined it in the dark and compared it with my other LEDs, so I can speak with a little authority at least. I would say it puts out about twice the light of my Brinkman, with much better coverage of course. The Cat Eye reflector doesn't give it the smoothest coverage in the world (not nearly as smooth as my PT Attitude), and you can see funny trapazoid bright lines, but they're lots smoother than the Brinkman's concentric rings, and the bright spot in the middle is just a really nice smooth place to focus your attention, not a Brinkman-like spotlight by any means.
It's in a nice compact design when you unclip it from the handlebars, very handy as a general-use flashlight. If you can afford about $25 retail, don't be afraid to buy this thing even if you don't have a bike. Although, well, I don't know, now I've got it in my lap and I'm wondering if the cover doesn't slide off too easily for general use. Hmmm, well, if you wrap some tape around it, that's won't be a problem. It does have a translucent white body, so cars can see it glow from the sides, and maybe the backwash of light won't please everybody.
Anyway, I do like it. And I'm the first kid on the block to have one. Cool.
