i'm getting a new cell phone. i'd like to have all my contacts and phone numbers stored in the phone, but i don't want to go through the laborious task of typing them in one by one with the phone keypad.

i'm assuming that the only option for easier entry (downloading from the computer or perhaps syncing with another program that has the contacts) is one of the palm or windows CE phones. but it doesn't hurt to ask if there are any other options to consider, like the blackberry, motorolas, etc.

i'm not really interested in using the phone to access the www or send/receive email. i just want to use it as a phone, but be able to easily modify the contacts.

thanks a lot for any suggestions!

Any good phone should be able to sync your contacts with your computer. Its a whole lot easier to type them up in Outlook then it is on ANY phone, Blackberry, Palm, or whatever.

I know that Verizon will transfer the info stored on your older mobile to the new one. Not too sure about the other wireless carriers, but I'm assuming that they have same or similar device for doing so onsite.

Enjoy!

Lot's of carriers will transfer contacts, but for a fee. The phone is perfectly capable of doing so with a USB cable, but they lock the firmware so it's forced to use their service that uses airtime.

However, it's not too difficult to get around it. There's plenty of websites dedicated to "unlocking" phones so you can do this and there's cheap USB kits for most popular phones. Many of them will transfer with popular e-mail and contact software like MS Outlook etc.

In Europe, most phones use a SIM card that stores the contacts, and your subscription info, so you can stuff it into any SIM phone and it "wakes up" as yours.

American providers usualy try to fight this portability.

However, some carriers, if you ask nicely will unlock your phone if you've been with them for a certain number of months in your contract.

thanks for the answers!

i currently have my contacts in my palm PDA. i was too lazy to try to put them into my old cell. i HATE typing them in using the phone keys!

so, what i'd like to do is consolidate and only carry one device.

obviously i could get the palm treo, but it is large, expensive, reportedly does not work really well as a phone, and has capabilities that i don't really want. however i could sync with my old palm and be done.

i wouldn't mind typing everything up on my computer and syncing into a razor or LG or whatever, if any of them can do that. i can't tell from the verizon www site if those are features of the phones or not.

i just reviewed the manual for the motorola K1 razr online. it has removable memory, but it seems that it only works for music and photos. it looks like entering contacts is only via the keypad on that particular phone.
