I received a little SF 6P cheapie clone as a Xmas gift. I feel obligated to do something with it, it would be bad form to just shelf it. Here are a few pics of it. I'd like to put a little q5 drop-in there, but the design doesn't make it look like that's possible. The reflector is built into the bezel, and doesn't look like it's coming out, short of breaking it into pieces and removing it. It's powered by a pair of 123's, so at least it has a decent power supply. I just need some new lamp suggestions.

Any specific suggestions? I've been trolling around the forum for a while, but still have a very novice understanding of hotwires. The bulb itself doesn't appear to seperate from its base. Does the entire module have to be replaced?

Looks like one of those chinese "police" xenon lights... unfortunately, it doesn't make a very good platform to build on because it uses a pretty non-standardized lamp assembly. For your next light look for one that uses a standard D26 style lamp assembly, then the world of LED and bulb upgrade options opens up wide.

I've already got a Maxfire LX and a G3 coming to play with. I also have a Q5 drop-in sitting here just waiting. I was just hoping there was something I can do with my Xmas light. I don't want to embarrass the giver by religating to a drawer. Good call on the cheap-o Chinese "Police" light, that's about what it is. This one is monikered "Swatforce"...........

if it were me.... and I absolutely HAD to modify this thing... I would be looking at that nice metal pill the bulb sits on and be thinking "hey nice heat sink!"

I think I would figure out a way to remove the bulb, and mount a driver board and Cree XRE Q5 into that "puck" looking thing that screws down into the light... More than likely the reflector would have to be drilled out to accommodate bringing the LED up into the reflector far enough to be "in focus."

The mod would probably require some minor cutting/machining of existing parts, and/or possible attaching some additional metal (like maybe a short "tower" to mount the LED to), also soldering and gluing/thermal-epoxy etc etc.. So the mod wouldn't be simple and easy. I would probably want 2 or 3 lights to experiment with, in my experience, I need to screw up and break a few things to effectively modify something.

I'd love to throw an LED into it, but the biggest problem is going to be the reflector. It's actually made from a solid piece of what appears to be aluminum, with a very small hole cutout for the stock lamp to stick though. I completely expected plastic.....although they were nice enough to give it a nice plastic window.

I'm guessing it's a lost cause as it sits. I'll just tough it out until it accidentally gets destroyed or lost.

I'd break the bulb off, drill a hole the size of a standard bi-pin holder (the type used for down lights and what not, mine are about 18 mm in diameter) wire it up and glue her in. Then you should be able to use whatever bi-pin bulb you'd like.
